MEET OUR FINALIST OF THE WEEK; ADEBAYO AARE
NAPS PRESS: Can we meet you?
Fleckless: I am Adebayo Aare. A final year student of the department of Philosophy, UI. I do a number of things but I’m presently honing my broadcast journalism skills with particular interest in special investigative reports, live news reports and field reports, as well as news casting.
NAPS PRESS: Did you choose Philosophy or did philosophy choose you !
Fleckless: Haaa... lol.
Well. Let me answer this way, I used to love being a pilot as a kid. I loved it so much until I got to secondary school and began to admire literature after meeting a my seat mate then. I’d say she helped me get better with use of English because she encouraged me to read a lot of books. So, I eventually found out that both of her parents were lawyers, when we were in JSS3, and she wanted to be a lawyer too. So, I decided I was going to study law too. But it was a choice influenced by my friend. That was how I opted for Arts class in senior secondary school. I soon lost contact with my friend after I changed my school and found passion for history on my own. But I hadn’t decided to study history at that point. I still wanted to study law. And when I wrote my first utme and post utme, instead of 74 that was the cut off mark for UI-Law in 2015, I had 71. So, I couldn’t secure admission to the faculty of law. So, I was advised to apply for change of course and I did. I chose history. But history wasn’t one of the subjects I did in both SSCE and UTME and it’s a criterion for being admitted to Ibadan school of history. So, I didn’t get admission that year.
It was the following that I chose philosophy as a stepping stone to reach law. But I soon found out that it’s impossible to leave the department of philosophy for the faculty of law. Long story short, that’s how I ended up here. So, I didn’t exactly choose philosophy. But philosophy has been quite interesting, I’d say.
NAPS PRESS: How has your academic journey been so far?
Fleckless: Well. It’s been quite good. But not without challenges. Like I mentioned already, philosophy has been interesting.
NAPS PRESS: What's your philosophy of life?
Fleckless: To live a life of aspirations is to live a life of tough experiences. The rougher the road gets, the tougher the traveler becomes. That’s how to make it to the destination.
More like “believe in yourself”.
NAPS PRESS: Relationship status?
Fleckless: I’m in a relationship. An interesting one
NAPS PRESS: What do you think can contribute to the growth of the department?
Fleckless: Well. I think a better inter-level relationship would help us grow better. It’s been a constant problem that we don’t get to relate well with one another. We hardly could recognise one another outside the department and I don’t think that’s good enough. I think my class tried our best to address it, but it hasn’t really changed. We still need to work on it. Maybe if the school gives us a better department arrangement and people are able to stay comfortably in the department for a long time during the day, things would change. It would help us grow.
NAPS PRESS: Do you think the virtual classes Would in anyway affect students academic performance this semester?
Fleckless: Lol. Yes. But positively. Because virtual classes has taken off the stress of having to go from one place to another for classes. You can literally remain in your room all day and not miss a single class (if you have data though). So, it makes it easier to study.
On the flip side however, it may have negative impact on students’ grades too. We are not wired the same way. While some may be comfortable studying alone and get good grades, some would need the assistance of others to understand some of the things that might have been explained in the class. So, people like that who don’t live in a place close to their colleagues may find it difficult to cope. I can’t even imagine having to go through the hurdles of PHI 302, symbolic logic on my own. And again, what happens when you need to attend a class but you don’t have data? So, it’s a dicey one. I hope everyone is able to find a balance.
NAPS PRESS: What do you intend to do with your Philosophy degree?
Fleckless: Maybe not with the degree itself. But with a background in philosophy, I have chosen journalism. I don’t want to lose the scholarly touch of philosophy and at the same time, I want to do something that fulfils my passion of helping others with what I do. So, Journalism it is. By God’s grace.
NAPS PRESS: Favorite Lecturers?
Fleckless: Dr Tade Adegbindin. Prof Adeshina Afolayan. Dr. Ipadeola.
NAPS PRESS: Shout out to anyone?
Fleckless: Lol. Shout out to everyone in the department.
