News: UI Management Reviews Cab Prices, Mascot Reacts

The management of University of Ibadan has reviewed and approved new cab prices to become effective on Monday, 13th March 2023.

This development, according to Vice Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale resulted in the 100percent of fuel pump price and the need for the change in prices, he said: “In view of apparent economic strains prompted by a 100% increase in the pump price of petrol in the country at large.

“It has become expedient for the intra-campus transport fares to be reviewed upward to ease the financial strain on operators and at the same time not to overburden the commuters” 

Available on the Institution’s bulletin, the new rate from the school gate to  places like, Queens Hall, Bookshop, Mellanby Hall, Tedder Hall, Bello Hall, Kuti Hall, SUB, Mosque, Catholic church, Chapel of Resurrection, PG College and Pharmacy pegged at N50.

From school gate to Faculty of Education, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Technology, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Social Science, Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies, Abadina, Botanical Garden, Awo Stadium, to all residential quarters per person and to other halls of residence, including Awo, Idia, Nnamdi Azikiwe and Independence Hall of Residence has been reviewed from N50 to N100.

While Ajibode, Distance Learning Centre, University of Ibadan Ajibode extension, and Tricycle drop now N150. For passenger willing to take drop, the new rate for not more than two passengers has been increased to N300.

The Students’ Union Reacts

Reacting, the Students’ Union President Adewole Yinka popularly known as Mascot has promised to dialogue with the management on reviewing the cab prices in other to make it affordable to the entire students

Mascot stated this in a special release titled “Attention of The Union Drawn To Newly Allocated Prices For Various Destinations on Campus “ appealing to students to remain calm while the Union contact relevant authorities.

The release reads partly: “The Union is committed to ensuring that all students have access to affordable and quality services on campus. We understand that the cost of living can be a challenge for students, and we are working to ensure that prices for goods and services on campus are reasonable and in line with the needs of the student community.

“We would like to assure the student populace that we are taking this matter seriously and are in communication with the relevant authorities to ensure that the new prices are reviewed and adjusted accordingly. We will keep you informed of any new developments and updates on the situation.”
