While The Ball Is Still In Your Court

While the Ball is still in Your Courts

It is no news that we are getting close to the end of the session and the activities and weeks will begin to roll in furiously. Forgive my manners, welcome to a new week NAPSITES. For some people in some faculties, this is the fourth week of classes although this is the ninth week of resumption already. This, we can say are due to forces beyond our control.

For the freshers who are still quite new to the system, the next couple of weeks will be filled with exciting events from the halls of residence, several faculties, and even departments that are not left behind. It's a period where one can get so enveloped in the fun and forget the major reason you are reading this right now; All work and no play, they say makes Jack a dull boy. It is very important to have fun and involve in extracurricular activities but never to the detriment of one's academics. The weeks will pass by and exams will roll in then the result will be there to stare at you in the face unapologetically.

The first-semester exam results are out already and you know your strong and weak points already. Stick to your plan to finish with a good grade. It is still very achievable, enjoy the moment of partying, 'vibing' with friends but don't get lost in the moment. 'Erosion and Tsunami' and very real. Create a timetable, if you feel the need to and stick to it. Consistency can never be overemphasized.

For the stallites and finalists who are not new to the system, enjoy the moment while it lasts. May our roads be smooth.

Elections are nearby and the student politicians are, here again, trying to canvass for votes. While some have been able to give intelligent responses when asked questions, others have just their name and motto to give when questioned. It is not enough that the aspirants have beautiful posters and graphics; popularity is not capability. It is required and highly important that smart, intelligent, and capable people are elected to office.

For the aspirants on the different levels(departments, faculties, and halls of residence), it is paramount to educate your campaign managers and supporters. Posters, graphics, and broadcasts do not do the job. Tell them your aims and what you tend to achieve in the office. The realistic goals and the way around them, shouting and bombarding the groups with your names can be shallow sometimes. Don't follow the trend of how it had been done, do it differently. It pays at the end because even if you don't win, you learn more about pitching your ideas and letting your views be known to the public. It's a big win if I'm asked.

For the voters who are also students of this prestigious university, the ball is still in your court to determine what grades you will finish with and what sort of leaders will assume the various positions. Cast your votes because the aspirants are eligible and seems capable for the post not because they are friends, roommates, or course mates. It goes way beyond that. That selfish decision ends up affecting a lot of students. Nigeria is a case study, I need not say more. Vote wisely. Before I leave, I will like to leave you with this last stanza of P.O.C Umeh's Ambassadors of Poverty, an all-time favorite

Ambassadors of poverty are

All of us whose in-actions

Steal our collective joy

Because of what we should do

Which we never do

As we bargain away

Our conscience in the marketplace

Under the weight of poverty

To assuage our hunger

And our master’s will
