“Technology Has Improved Journalism, Not Threatened It” - Lasisi Olagunju

Mr. Lasisi Olagunju, a veteran journalist who works for the Tribune Newspaper has said that Technology has always improved journalism and not threaten it. He stated this at the 35th induction ceremony of the Union of Campus Journalists, UI held on Saturday, 24th of February, 2024.

Mr. Olagunju as the keynote speaker spoke on the topic, “Does AI Threaten Job Security in Journalism". He started his speech by saying no job is secured that all jobs are at risk but personal development helps you retain your job. Mr. Olagunju believes that robots, that is, AI does not threaten journalism rather lack of support is what threatens journalism.

“Technology has always improved journalism and not threaten it,” he said. He recounts how getting news story evolved from fax to e-mails and now we can get news stories comfortably from the internet. He further explains that AI cannot report, cannot do investigative journalism, cannot report an accident scene among other things
He believes strongly that AI does not threaten journalism but helps it instead.

There were also other Speakers who are renowned Journalists and Editors of reputable and prominent newspapers houses, the likes of Kabir Adejumo, Alao Abiodun and so on. Also, Isaac Martins, the 32nd President of the union graced the occasion.
The held at First Bank Building, Faculty of Agric, was themed “Beyond Bylines: Impacting Society Through Journalism”.
