It must have occured to you, strolling through the streets
of Ibadan, and then someone catches your eye. He/she is wearing a Ankara
blazer, paired effortlessly with jeans and a pair of crisp white sneakers. What
comes to mind? You immediately say, “STEEZE”, what a perfect blend of tradition
and modernity.
In today’s Nigeria, young people are redefining fashion by
mixing traditional attire with contemporary styles. It’s a creative way of
staying connected to cultural roots while embracing the trends of the 21st
century.
This blend of old and new is everywhere. From the streets of Lagos to university campuses in
Ibadan, young Nigerians are taking traditional attire like Ankara and Aso Oke
and turning them into modern statements.
Let us think of a classic agbada, but now worn with a pair
of trendy loafers, or an Ankara dress styled with a leather jacket. These
combinations are not just about fashion but about expressing identity in a
world where cultural lines are constantly being thined.
What’s however driving this trend? For many, it’s a way of
honoring and retaining their heritage while still fitting into a globalized
world. It’s about showing that you can be proudly Nigerian and still engage
with modern fashion. Fashion in this sense doesn't need choose between old and
new. Nigerians are proving that while having a merge, you can always make a
statement, you can be creative and consequently maintain your cultural pride.
