Nigerians Agony: The Only Option Left is a Protest

Nigerians Agony: The Only Option Left is a Protest

By Esesuru Sarah

Recall that few months ago, the Labour Union challenged the federal government with a strike action on issues surrounding the increment in the average minimum wage of Nigerians by over 100% but the demands of the Union was slashed down to #70k monthly by the federal government.

After the saga between the Labour Union and Federal government, citizens of Nigeria announced that there would be a nationwide protest against incompetent and bad governance in Nigeria's political structure. This was as a result of the high cost of living in the country among many other critical problems faced by Nigerians which was intensified and heightened just few months after President Tinubu was declared the winner of the 2023 Presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Nationwide protest which kickstarted on the 1st of August, 2024 experienced some major interference by federal government by deploring Armed Forces and other security agents who were armed to overseee and monitor the affairs of an harmless protest by armless protesters.

This action by the government has raised so many questions by citizens of the country whether another repeat of the 2020 Lekki Toll Gate Massacre would surface for the second time or not. However, millions in the Northern region of the country have been placed on a 24 hour curfew. Reports that three people were killed in Kano, and 269 looters were arrested for taking 25 litre groundnut oil from a warehouse near the Governor of Kano's house.

But despite the threats and suppressions from the government, these protesters were not in any way intimidated or swayed by the ill-treatment of the government. Infact, some of these citizens are ready to fight with their last blood inorder to put an end to bad and corrupt government in Nigeria.

The question here is, will all these protests make a significant change? Will the cry of the suppressed and oppressed citizens dethrone these incompetent ones from their tyrannical thrones? These questions might not have a definite answer yet but little drops of water make an ocean indeed.
