Amelioration team; rocky or smooth journey so far?
The man who does not ask his way around may eventually get lost. This is a popular saying to implore people to seek for help and directions when they get confused on their way. The department executives recently released the amount that is expected of every NAPSITE to pay for the session. There is the basic dues which is said to be compulsory for every NAPSITE and others like the dinner, shirt and the likes that is optional. For freshers who are still new to the system, what this implies will be explained shortly. The basic dues just like its name, is necessary for the running of the affairs of the department. The basic dues caters for the annual NAPS package, department week(which usually comes up in second semester), sport etc. Usually, there's a special fee for freshers for the "freshers' welcome" but this was not included which means there is no freshers' welcome for this session as a result of the new learning system (Nevertheless, all freshers are welcome to the department and we hope you enjoy your stay among intellectuals). The reason for this is unknown as the department executives have decided to embark on a 'Silence Competition' with the University's management. May the loudest silence win!
After the release of the dues, a request of the break down of the basic dues follows and was supplied. According to the Financial secretary who provided this information, the basic dues is for the following:
NAPS package - 1500
Executive council- 150
LRC- 100
PRESS - 100
Tutorial- 100
Sport- 50
Departmental Week - 500
For those who may be oblivious to this fact, the LRC is the Legislative Representative Council and it consists of representatives in each level of the department, knowing that this semester is virtual, why is there a provision for LRC meetings? This fee usually takes care of refreshments during their meetings or printing of letters for certain occasions. Now that all our activities are supposed to be online, what is it that the executives and LRC are up to? Was the fee included because it's the norm or because it will be converted to data for online meetings for the sittings? There's the inclusion of sport fee too, for what purpose exactly? Online sport platforms? This amount may appears token but we need not to forget that; 'little drops of water becomes a mighty ocean'. Every NAPSITE deserve to know what is done with every penny of their money
Also, its shocking to know that NAPSITES are expected to pay into the Financial secretary's personal account and we wouldn't want to assume this is a tentative act. Mismanagement and embezzlement of funds is not new to anybody. From departments to faculties to halls of residence, there have several cases of executives involved in this despicable act. There have been rumors about mismanagement of funds by executives in the department from previous administrations and it is quite surprising that the executives decided to start their journey really rough. How do we get proper accountability from a personal account? How does transparency comes to play? What about the department's account?
Perhaps, the executives need to be reminded their manifestos. They should go back to it if they have forgotten because we have not. A little pinch here and there will not hurt, so this is us doing the pinching so as not to get lost in assumptions. NAPSITES are asking for their way around. My our roads be smooth

THIS IS NOT A SLIP OF TONGUE; IT IS A SLIP OF THOUGHT
ReplyDeleteI seek your indulgence to remind you that something you say by accident when you intended to say something else, is called a slip tongue. Perhaps, when it occurs in reasoning, it is 'a slip of thought'. Simply put, error in thinking.
I am entirely not surprised that the press could be found wanting of this kind of error. Methinks that slip of thought should not come from a press organization of the department whose preoccupation is good ratiocination. But I think I was grossly wrong.
This Editorial made some oscillating unspeakable errors:
[A] AMELIORATION TEAM INSTEAD OF EFFICIENT AMELIORATION TEAM
Even though an editorial is opinion-based, it is still important to provide your readers with well-researched write up. How on earth would you miss the theme of the present administration? That is highly contemptuous; highly unintelligible.
[B] FRESHERS' WELCOME FEE EXCLUSION
The hallmark of every great administration is apt distinction between needs and necessities. In college, if you were fortunate enough to have had a brilliant teacher in Economics, you could have been taught about the concept of Opportunity Cost - an expression of cost in terms of forgone alternatives.
I need to remind you again that there is a strong rule from the University Management that there should not be any convergence. So, it was logical enough that the administration was prudent in their decision to remove the traditional budget for the Freshers' Welcome programme. Or let me ask, are you saying the administration should fly in the face of the school rule and thereby be sanctioned? Please, Editor, implore your members on the importance of thinking straight.
[C] NO NEED FOR LRC AND SPORTS BUDGET
I need to refer you back to your position on the removal of LRC budget - perhaps for its self-defeating propositions. You made it known that the LRC make printings of letters or memo, and you still go on in your argument that removal of their budget was logical enough. Haba! You should know that there is a cost for their online meetings too, even that alone justifies the need for allocation of LRC budget. Are you coming along?
ON Sport, all things being equal, there will be sporting activities in second semester. Did you still think that the administration should not include the budget for sports? Or are you saying that Napsites should be excluded from the faculty sporting competitions come second semester?
Hahah.. Please, Recte Sapere Fons [thinking straight is the fount of knowledge]
[D] MONEY SHOULD NOT GO INTO PERSONAL ACCOUNTS
Fine. You have aired the same thought everyone else would have. But if you had made adequate research into such decision, you would come to understand that one of the signatory to the organization's account, Dr Ipadeola, is on her sabbatical in Europe. So, if money is paid into the account, it will be essentially impossible to get the money out for various activities for which it is pegged for. For that, the staff adviser had advised not to send money to the account and find a means possible to get a personal account for the time being.
So, you are not aware of this as a press organization? Wow! This is sad.
Dear Editor,
I think I should re-orientate you that the press is not an institution for antagonistic arguments against the administration. No. It is a necessary platform that needs not be passionate, rather objective about truth, about all the happenings in the department. Is it bad to tell the people about the reason(s):
i. for paying into the account of the financial secretary.
ii. for the exclusion of budget FRESHERS' WELCOME.
And again, Dear Editor, I think it would be great for you to get your members a copy of Ukpokolo's Methodology of Rational Inquiry, at least, let them learn about how to make RESEARCH. And perhaps, in good faith, if you need my help I could take you some classes.
Thank you.
