Editorial: Beyond ASUU Crisis

Nigeria's public universities are currently experiencing challengesthey frequently make the news for internal conflicts, and industrial unrest rather than for scientific discoveries or other academic achievements.

ASUU had 16 strikes between 1999 and October 2022. Even though the eight-month-long crippling lecturers’ strike has ended and classes have resumed at public institutions across the nation, there isan eerie stillness that permeates the campuses. Due to the government’s application of the “no work, no pay” concept, only aportion of the salaries for October were paid to dons, who areprotected by the umbrella of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. The possibility of a strike restart is serious given that some ASUU chapters have threatened to take severe action and thatthe government is remaining steadfast.

This should not be permitted to occur for the benefit of more than one million students in public universities who are now enrolled atthe institutions, as well as their parents and guardians. Additionally, there is a pressing need to save the public university system, strengthen the international standing of Nigerian institutions, andbring back the standard of both teaching and research. Admissions for four-year programs result in students staying for six or more years. Since the wealthier Nigerians choose private universities and, increasingly, foreign institutions, this hurts the most vulnerable members of society the most. Therefore, all parties involved should work together to save the system.

Even if Nigeria's educational system is failing, having an sound education is not a scam, if you yet to start out on how to achieve a desire able grades, it's best for you to start now. Do not be fooled by the saying " las las we go dey alright"  Your pal is busy lighting the midnight candles while he keeps blowing this in your ears. Take the lectures seriously, set up a good learning environment for yourself, turn in your assignments, take careful notes, and set aside time for studying. If you are not prepared to "dey alright, you fit no dey alright laslas". And yes always remember your academics is worth doing distinctively well.
