Editorial: Now that the strike is over

The Academic Staff Union of Universities recently ended strike had an impact on students, and it has undoubtedly been a hard and exhausting year for studentsASUU and Federal Government put many students’ mental stability and fortitude to ultimate test; it was eight months of torture. We genuinely hope that someday we will have a government that is serious about education and has the moral fiber to implement thorough reforms that will bring standards into academia, and that Asuu will no longer rely on outmoded channels of communication with the Federal Government.

To some students, getting this degree remains a priority, but one thing will surely keep them grounded. One can probably agree with, that this is the case. With all the demands and rigors, school may be challenging. Without a purpose, it could appear as though it's not really worth it, yet at the tiniest moments of the drama that defines students daily lives is that we tend to cling to something that sustains us in a culture obsessed with entrepreneurship.  Even though returning to school could have seemed like the only reasonable course of action, stating your motivations for continuing your education raises your awareness to a new level. The solution offers you a solid grounding force, keeping you anchored. It's okay if you don't immediately know the answer,  finding it is itself a step in the right direction.

For students who are still hesitant to resume their academic pursuits, try to instill in you the idea that motivation and action are mutually reinforcing. Use motivation when you have it, but don't depend on it. Simply getting started with your academic pursuits will teach you how to produce it yourself.

As students awaits the position of the ASUU National Executive Council following the decision of the federal government to pay the lecturers half salaries for the month of October. It should be noted that the suspension of the strike was based by the court order while the government is yet to meet some of the demands includes Earned Academic Allowances, Promotion arrears and withheld salaries. Although ASUU NEC is yet to make an official position but there is this sign of uncertainty of what the coming days holds for students. This uncertainty indicates that there is a deep-seated desire for development and mastery. students should see this as a sign that one require more challenges and chances for real growth in one's life especially if one frequently feels stuck or overwhelmed by uncertainty.

Dear freshmen, we understand how eager you are to continue your academic journey in the University of Ibadan. We sincerely hope you have the mental fortitude to overcome the challenges you face. Staylites and finalists, it's about time you prioritized your personal development abilities, particularly in light of the goal-based society we currently live in, where success is determined by how others judge our track record of life accomplishments. Finally, we sincerely hope that Asuu won't interfere with academic activities once more and that the federal government will be responsible enough to negotiate a settlement with the union. Knowing that time squandered cannot be recovered is so depressing, but we must all prepare for the unpredictable times that are now upon us. Happy resumption once again.
