Interview: Meet Ikechukwu Finalist of The Week

NAPS PRESS: Can we meet you?

Ikechukwu Anowa-Duke: My name is Ikechukwu Anowa-Duke, a 400 Level student of the department. I am the chillest guy you'd ever meet. I enjoy meeting new people, hanging out with friends, reading and living a life of leisure. I hold strongly, my faith as a Christian and I prioritise self development above anything

NAPS PRESS: What was your first impression about philosophy?

Ikechukwu Anowa-Duke: Up until I attended my first philosophy class, I knew I wasn't going to stay in the department for four years. I knew I was going to transfer to another department. I saw my admission to study philosophy as my way into the university. Little did I know that I was going to pick up a flare for the course and ride with it till the very end. And so far, it hasn't been so good, but I wouldn't have wanted it any better

NAPS PRESS: Is it safe to say philosophy choose you?

Ikechukwu Anowa-Duke: We chose ourselves. While it was holding me by the neck, I was equally holding it by the waist. It has been a Yin-Yang, push-pull, relationship with the course. It chose me and I didn't fight it. I embraced it. So, yeah philosophy chose me and I chose her back.

NAPS PRESS: What is your take on the notion that "With philosophy you can work anywhere"?

Ikechukwu Anowa-Duke: With my experience as a tech bro for two years and also in my role in AIESEC both locally and on the national level, exposing me to the learn/earn aspect of adulting, I can say that while you might need to learn other skills and seek out new paths in navigating this life, especially in order to earn a living, the knowledge philosophy would play a major role in how efficient you are and how solution-oriented you are. It helps broaden your thinking and as a result challenges you to be more up and doing in any space you find yourself in. It will help you stand out.

NAPS PRESS: Has your journey as a philosophy student been  worthwhile?

Ikechukwu Anowa-Duke: It hasn't been the best, it has been one hurdle after the other, but, it has been worth every second I've spent as a student.

NAPS PRESS: Asides philosophy, where else does your interest lies?

Ikechukwu Anowa-Duke: Social impact and  personal development. My life around the university has hinged on those. I graduated in 2021 as a fellow of the United Nations Millennium fellowship where I ran a social impact project on SDG within Ibadan, which was a success. You can follow the project on Instagram @theaidng. Being a member of AIESEC in Ibadan, I have been opportune to live, work with and experience life from the eyes of different lenses in 4 different states this year alone, exposing me to where we are failing as a country, a people and a civilization and also pointing me to what I can do to make this world a better place. Asides from these, over the last few years, I have prioritized self-development by taking up roles, and courses, gaining volunteering experiences and many more. Summarily, my interests circles round these two things, Social impact and self development

NAPS PRESS: What do you think the department should improve on?

Ikechukwu Anowa-Duke: I honestly do not know. Ngl

NAPS PRESSWhat do you intend to do with your Philosophy degree?

Ikechukwu Anowa-Duke: First of all, I will cry after I get the degree, then show my parents. I will then proceed to using the degree to run out of the country (lmao)

NAPS PRESS: Any word(s) to fellow Napsites?

Ikechukwu Anowa-Duke: Join AIESEC, thank me later.
