Interview: Meet Funmibi; Finalist of the week

NAPS PRESS: Can we meet you?

Funbi: My name is OluwaFunmibi Akinleye. I am a 400-level student in the department of Philosophy. I am also a skincare enthusiast, I enjoy consulting and formulating cosmetic products for specific skin concerns.

NAPS PRESS: How would you describe your journey so far as a philosophy student

Funbi: The journey hasn’t been easy, but it is worth it. It has been one of self-discovery, learning, growing, and understanding myself and the world around me. I’ve had high and low moments but I always try to remind myself of who I hope to become, and a discouraged person isn’t on the list.

NAPS PRESS: Have you ever had moments when you thought it was best for you to cross to another department?

FunbiOhh! Yes. I had aspired to study law. I thought the change would be right for me. I’d see my friends in their black and white outfits knowing that that could be me. Over time, I have learnt to embrace philosophy as a course of study and it’s helped to broaden my horizon.

NAPS PRESS: Has studying philosophy been worthwhile?

Funbi: Yes, it has. Philosophy has encouraged me to be flexible in my thinking and I have developed a deeper understanding of the world around me. It has also taught me to appreciate the beauty of ideas and enjoy the search for knowledge.

NAPS PRESS: What is your take on the notion “with philosophy you can work anywhere”?

Funbi: You’d be surprised that ‘you can work anywhere’. Philosophy indeed provides excellent preparation for many types of careers. This course you are studying equips you with life skills, and this can be invaluable. It teaches us how to think, and more importantly, helps us make sense of the world around us. It provides a framework of understanding that can be applied to nearly any field. Philosophy is a great way to sharpen your skills in communication, analysis, creativity and problem-solving, and its transferable work skills are highly beneficial across many industries. All of these qualities make philosophy an invaluable skill for the global knowledge worker.

NAPS PRESS: Asides philosophy what else interests you ?

Funbi: My interests lie in so many areas such as Real estate, Cybersecurity, Business and Entrepreneurship, but most of all, I am passionate about skin health.

NAPS PRESS: What advice would you give to freshmen who intend to cross to another department due to the supposed abstractness of  philosophy?

Funbi: Take your time to embrace this course. Let an interest in philosophy spark from within. What Philosophy gives that other courses do not is the freedom to explore the big questions, options and ideas of the world you live in. Remember, knowledge learnt can be applied to any career path of your choosing.  I did not find Philosophy easy and still do not. More so, I love a good challenge.

NAPS PRESS: What do you think the department should improve on ?

Funbi: Not to say that some teachings are outdated. Philosophy is constantly a modern subject. While we keep turning back to the first philosophers and their rich insights, today, there are questions about human rights, social justice, and the role of technology in culture and society. Also, social interaction. Weirdly, I don’t know so many students at the junior level. Let’s get to know each other.

NAPS PRESS: Any word of advice to Napsites?

Funbi: My final words will be from Bankole Williams.

‘Seek to outdo your previous display of excellence and not outdo others. Always Seek to become the grandest expression of yourself’.

NAPS PRESS: Shout out to anyone?

Funbi: Shout out to everyone in the department who might not be having it easy. God’s got you and I’m rooting for you!
