A 300L student of Department of Philosophy Emmanuel Ugbomiekon has emerged the top five in the 2022 UNESCO Media and Information Literacy (MIL) essay competition.
The essay, “how can media and information literacy foster innovative cities development in Nigeria?” according to the organizers is aimed at creating awareness on what the initiative represent.
Speaking about the essay, Emmanuel stated: “I’d like to give all the glory to God for the gift of life and intellect. As a Nationwide contest, the competition was surely going to be prime, so while I applied for the general purpose of participation, I inadvertently put in the most I could to make it a worthy entry.
“Creative writing is a summation of the bright Sparks of ideas and the bleak stillness of blanks, hence the rollercoaster of process is usually there, however, it is pitching the pieces together in coherent harmony that eventually brings about good works, and that definitely was what summed up my enterprise as I wrote, and somehow, my ideas on the theme topic “How MIL foster innovation and sustainability in Nigerian cities” were considered good enough as part of the best five!”
Amongst the over hundred applicants, according to Emmanuel; “I was in the echelon of those recognized. While a cash prize was attached, I was satisfied more with knowing that many things are possible when we try, something Dashauna Barber sums as “…not trying being the beginning of regret”, undoubtedly, just believing and doing could be a win; and that’s my parting words, giving up is usually the beginning of regret, not losing!”
