News: Fact-Check Election Trains UCJ UI Members on Fact-Checking

Fact-checking organisation in conjunction with Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative on Saturday, 14th January, 2023 organised a one-day intensive training on elections fact-checking for fact-checkers, journalists from UCJ UI and others.

The training featured a lineup of experts from Africa Check, TheCable, Media Career Nigeria, Data Phyte and Zee Checks. Supported by Karibu Foundation, the participants were effectively trained on the fundamental tools required for fact-checking; with the aim of curbing misinformation, disinformation and mal-information while disseminating authentic news.

Ms. Adesewa, a participant and reporter from Yali Networkclaimsher major take-away from the event was that "pre-bunking can be intelligently used to fight the spread of fake news. Therefore, fact-checkers should be proactive while handling information".

One of the speakers, Mr. David Ajikobi, the Nigerian Editor for Africa Check noted that the steps fact-checkers should take before making a claim must include identifying the source of their claim, defining the terms and concepts within the claim, inspecting their data, asking the experts and then setting out evidence.

The event didn't end without intensively enlightening the attendees and fully equipping them for effective fact-checking especially toward the forthcoming general elections and beyond.
