The Association of Faculty of Arts' (AFAS) Sports Director, Alawiye Israel has been impeached by the Association of Faculty of Arts, Legislative Council (FLC), following the allegations of negligence of constitutional duties and unaccountability levied against.
The impeachment took place during the first Plenary sitting of the house for the semester, held at Room 32, Faculty of Arts, on Saturday, 25th of March 2023.
Recall that the sports Director had been reported to the house by the executive council, in one of the sittings held in the last semester, on the negligence of his duties and some inappropriate behavior, on which grounds, the executive council had decided to suspend him and sent a letter to the house informing them of the decision.
On this case, the house decided, then, to have an investigation carried out, to find out if he was guilty of the allegations against him, during which he was temporarily suspended and restricted from the Executive office in the Faculty and all items belonging to the association that was with him was to be submitted.
However, following investigations and the inability of the Sport Director to present any document to the audit committee concerning the money expended on sports day of the fresher’sorientation, the House stated that he would be impeached on thegrounds of negligence of duty and unaccountability, owing tothe undertaking the Sports’ Director signed on Thursday, 15th ofDecember, 2022.
The house reached this decision after a secret ballot voting process was conducted involving the fifteen members present in the house excluding the speaker and the outcome of the vote had 12 members in support of the impeachment while 3 members were against it.
Following this, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Akindejoye, stated that the house will forward a letter to the CPS on the vacancy of the position and the need for the conduction of a bye election, concluding that the AFAS President, Hon. Akinyoola Emmanuel, 'shall look into the office' between now and when a bye-election is conducted according to Article 38(5) of the constitution.
