Just last week on the 20th of April, the Department of Philosophy launched the first ever event of it’s kind; a department wide inter-level debate and symposium, pioneered by Naps very own President. This was established in order to not only enrich the students of the Department of Philosophy academically but to fulfill her electoral manifesto.
The venue was sent out weeks before the event, the PRO made sure to flood the online groups with memos and banners and to all intents and purposes, they worked hard to make this event as appealing to the Napsites as possible, what then was the reason for the low turnout rate? Could the Naps Executive team have done more than they already did? Highly Unlikely.
It’s no mystery that as students, a majority of us are looking for the least stressful path to get us through school. Maximizing fun while still maintaining our CGPA isn’t always easy but somehow, we always seem to squeeze out time for a social event to take off some of the stress of studying, it’s quite a pity that same amount of grit and enthusiasm can’t be applied to academic events.
The executive team gave it all they had but ultimately, the success was dependent on the presence of the body of students to bring the event to life like all events and the symposium was not any different.
The allocated venue for the event was the LLT, Faculty of Arts and it was dissapointing to realize that the constituency alongside other invited members of other universities barely filled half of the event. This was even more evident that it was a Naps issue as the invited students eventually had to leave, showing just how empty the venue really was.
Luckily, the Inter-level debate was exciting and the symposium was riveting enough for not many people to be able to tell the difference but it is quite a shame when we think about the fact that this event was the first of it’s kind and should undoubtably set the tone for any such events going forward. If the tone for this event starts out this faint and untenanted, what then are we to expect from future events?
The least we can do as students is to show our support for our department and appreciate the efforts of the executives even if it can be tedious at times, hopefully in the near future, students can meet academic events with the same enthusiasm and pep as they do social events, even if not for zeal for the event itself but for the love of NAPS.
