“I Chose Philosophy; It Did Not Choose Me.,” says Philosophy Finalist

Amywrites

In the face of the anxious question that some philosophy students ask, especially those who did not choose the course, “What do I do with philosophy?”, a final-year student of the philosophy department, Ogunmoded Samuel Toba, said he chose philosophy of his own accord and intends to pursue a lecturing profession in it.

NAPS PRESS: Let the readers meet you, please.

Toba: Hello, I am Ogunmodede Samuel Toba.

NAPS PRESS: Share your experiences so far in the Philosophy department.

Toba: It has been really great. So far so good.

NAPS PRESS:  Is studying Philosophy a thing of chance or choice?

Toba: Let me say it is a thing of choice. I chose Philosophy; it did not choose me.

NAPS PRESS:  Do you have regrets as a Philosophy student?

Toba: No, I do not. I believe Philosophy seems useless to many because of the situation of the country or because it is not a professional course like accounting or medicine, among others which have specific domains.

NAPS PRESS:  Many Philosophy students come up blank with job options in Philosophy; what is your stance on this?

Toba: Well, the very first thing I will say is that we should try to come out with a good grade. The second is building connections and relationships (it may come in handy). The next is learning to market one's value. Philosophy is not bad at all. We should just learn to market it. I believe we can go places with Philosophy if we have something to offer out there.

NAPS PRESS:  If you were to tow the line of academics, what would be your reason for being a Philosophy lecturer?

Toba: Well, I have always wanted to become a lecturer. So, I believe studying Philosophy makes it easier now. Portraying Philosophy in a new light could be another reason for me to be a Philosophy lecturer.

NAPS PRESS:  How, in your opinion, will Philosophy be involved in Nation building?

Toba: I believe Philosophy is a tool for reviving this nation. We need philosophers who can formulate or postulate philosophies that are very powerful such that they can bring positive effects to the State (Nigeria). Overall, we need leaders who are knowledgeable in Philosophy and can use the power of Philosophy to change the condition of the State for good.

NAPS PRESS:  What watchword do you have for other Philosophy students?

Toba: You do not fail until you admit it. So, it is not over until it is over.
