By Anita

Today's philosopher of the week is a name we all know or one we are sure to get acquainted with in the course of studying philosophy, our Philosopher of the Week is French Philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau. He was a French philosopher, writer, and composer of the Enlightenment era.

One of his most famous works is "The Social Contract," where he explored the concept of a social contract between individuals and the state, emphasizing the idea of popular sovereignty.

Rousseau is known for his idea of the "noble savage," suggesting that humans are inherently good but corrupted by society. This concept greatly influenced later thinkers and Romantic literature. Rousseau's writings had a profound impact on the Romantic movement in literature and art. His emphasis on emotions, individualism, and nature resonated with Romantic thinkers.

Besides philosophy, Rousseau was a skilled composer and wrote several musical compositions, including operas and pieces for the flute.
