If
you have made your way to the First Gate of the University of Ibadan this past
week, there is no doubt that you have seen the numerous banners lining the
roads, Banners that read; UI @ 75. For the undergraduates who were admitted in
2018, this is a very familiar sight as five years ago when we were given
admissions, UI was celebrating its 70th founding anniversary.
Five
years. Five years is a lot of time when you look at it in retrospect, a lot can
be achieved in five years, there's hardly any student who was accepted at that
time for a four-year course that would envision themselves still being in the
University but alas, with the presence of Strikes looming over our necks and
the unfortunate Lockdown caused by the Corona Virus, our plans which were set
in stone have been swept towards a new direction.
Five
years is a lot of time, fortunately, those five years haven't been completely
wasted. Despite the glaring setbacks, UI has continued to progress, albeit at a
coma-inducing snail's pace. Within those five years, we have seen new buildings
being unveiled, speedy construction on academic buildings being undertaken and
slow but steady revamps of old amenities being made.
These
slow-paced improvements may not be obvious at first but they are much more
evident when you take a closer look, it is indeed with pride that we note that
the University is in no way identical to the state it was in when we first
arrived and with even more of a delight that we note that this is in a very
positive light and thus with the celebration of the upcoming anniversary, we
find ourselves looking towards UI's future with hope and excitement at what the
coming years will bring, regardless of pace.
