The Seals Cup has just hit a more interesting phase, as the fate of the qualifiers is already getting decided. While some teams eased their progression into the last 16, others found the progression quite the struggle.
Philosophy seemed set for a smooth ride, racing past a disorganized Mechanical Engineering side in what was an entertaining 3 - 0 match. The Plato Academy’s dominance is well known by the average Uite, and that was why it was more shocking to see them fall to MBBS in their second fixture.
The loss to MBBS canceled out their goal difference and saw the Faculty of Arts champions back in a struggle for a spot in the first round of the knockout stage. Adult Education is on level terms with Philosophy and will be presenting a stern test for the Plato Academy.
The Philosophy team will be looking to fully maximize their attackers against Adult Education, unleashing the likes of Awolowo and John on adventurous runs to destabilize the Adult Education defense. The midfield was second-best most times during the match against MBBS, and they could use the fixture against Adult Education to reassert their authority in UI football.
A win for Philosophy on Friday will pit them against another opponent from the Faculty of Education in the form of Educational Management, who emerged group leaders in Group A after brushing past defending champions Geography in their final group fixture.
The Plato Academy could be up against a tough run to the final, but they are definitely in the running for the title. Their abilities are undoubtedly top-tier in campus football, and, with such a line of quality players, Philosophy can brush their recent setbacks away with a dominant win over the Adult Education team.
The date is Friday, 13 October 2023; the time is 12:30 p.m. Be at the SUB to cheer the Plato Academy on!
