Seals Cup '23: 'for the Love of Plato'

Kon Eme

Hearts thudding, Adrenaline pumping, Emotions at an all-out high. The atmosphere, last Friday at the SUB pitch was thrumming with anticipation as Uites showed up in their numbers, enthusiastically supporting both teams who had made it to the Seals Cup Finals.

For the Department of Philosophy, this atmosphere wasn't so unfamiliar, after all, their football team, 'Plato Academy' had fought their way to the finals the year before, and only to have victory stretched just out of reach, during the penalty shootouts.

Time skip to a year forward and the stakes are pretty much the same, if not more harrowing. After all, it was the last chance for the finalists on the team to win the Seals Cup. A draw after a long harrowing match, leading up to the dreaded penalty shootouts, where luck has as much a part to play as skill, making it even more gut-wrenching to witness. The atmosphere rivaled that of a Premier League match and even though the winning goal was scored by Plato Academy's own Awolowo - whom many are donning the unofficial MVP, we're here to acknowledge the true MVP of the match; the passionate fans of the football team.

The passion and the turnout this year were nearly unprecedented, with fans showing up in their droves, donning the greens of the team, and exulting the official chants. Their passion and raw energy, are easily discernable, even through a screen. With the passion of the fans and the vigor of their support, it was no wonder that the players were able to match that frenzy and present us with a thrilling, remarkable mark, bringing home the Seals trophy and marking the beginning of a legacy.
