A Freshman Guide to Navigating Social Jamboree

It's no longer alien to staylites of the most prestigious university in Nigeria, University of Ibadan, that the second semester of every session is always. From great social events like JAW War, to the UISU week, to departmental and faculty events, to the fun week of all halls of residence, to external events hosted on the campus, and lots more; second semester is usually an event-filled semester.

Over time, students especially Freshmen have proven to have struggled one way or the other to not lag behind in social events, and also maintain their high academic reputation.

However, as a freshman, you might have heard from friends, acquaintances, or siblings on how one can get distracted in every second semester in the University of Ibadan due to her clustered of social events but there's no cause for alarm because you're already on the right path by reading this article, and definitely these tips will be so helpful for you.

1.Set a mindset: As well all know, before striking out a plan, having a mindset (be it positive or negative) is very important for any realistic, or productive plan. Set your aims, goals, and expectation behind every plan you intend to make.

2. Outline your schedule for the semester: Start with a list. Start by writing down a to-do list of all your tasks and assignments. Gather the course presentations from all of your courses. These will tell you the dates of examinations, tests, assignments, and presentations. Add all of these dates to your semester schedule.

3.Be flexible: Reality is often far from expectations when most people create a daily routine. It’s impossible to foresee the slight hiccups that come along with every day, so try not to be too rigid.

4. Prioritize Your Tasks: What do you need to do that will move you closer to your daily goals? Figure out what those tasks are and highlight them. Once you figure out what they are, it would be wise to coordinate them with the hour of day you’re most productive, and convenient for you. Some people work best later in the day, so their most important tasks should be completed around 4-6 PM. Understanding your body’s natural routine will make following your schedule frictionless.

5.Finish Assignments before due dates: It's a very common habit amongst most students to wait until few days till the submission of assignments but you know in most cases, it goes south. If this habit worked for you last semester, then it doesn't mean it will work for you again this semester. Always endeavor to finish all assignments at least a week before the submission date inorder to keep you on track, and less burdened.

6.Be Wise: As our popular motto for the year goes “no gree for anybody”, please gree for wisdom o. Don't be too overwhelmed with social events that may cause you to attend all events. You don't have to be present in all social events this semester because it really may not end up well. It's a great thing to socialize, and hang out with people but at the same time, your presence does not necessarily have to be felt in all gathering or occasion.

Set a plan on the number of social events you would love to attend so as to avoid stories like “If only I had known”.

You don't have to be intimidated or overwhelmed by diverse social events this semester, just remember before any event be it Jaw War, Musical Concerts, or other events, your responsibility as a student should be placed as a first priority above every other, and you're definitely good to go.
With these tips, then you can be rest assured that you won't feel too overwhelmed, and at the same time maintain those high academic standards.

Good luck!
