When you saw the title of this piece, 'Mental Health', you probably thought: well, I have no mental illness! I take good care of myself! Do you, really? Most people have given their mental health no good consideration. Mental health is more than the absence of a mental illness, it includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects your thought system, actions, feelings, choices, and relation to others. Paying careful attention to your mental health won't only affect your mental state but it's essential for your overall health and quality of life.
Talking about self-care, it requires taking a conscious effort to engage in things that enable you live healthy, both physically and mentally. It's worthy of note that regardless of your seemingly insignificant attempt to manage your mental stress, it can facilitate a big impact on your overall health. However, it is important you make the decision to begin the journey of managing your mental health. You may ask the question: How do I begin this journey? Here are some tips to managing your mental health:
What is your Hobby? It's necessary you develop a hobby. That is, engaging what you find pleasure in doing at your leisure time. Beyond the academic world, vacation and other personal commitments, you need to discover what can consistently bring you smile and joy.
Give room for sleep and relaxation: You really need to create time for sleep and relaxation. Always being engulfed in intense workload won't be beneficial to your mental health. It's understandable that you have tons of things to sort out but you also need to prioritize your mental health. This calls for strategic schedules, inclusive of sleep and relaxation.
Eat well and stay hydrated: Well, you could be thinking of the present economic downturn of the country. Notwithstanding, you need to give an extra effort to eat healthy and stay hydrated. Spending a quite amount on caffeinated beverages and snacks won't really help. You can make a conversion to having a balanced diet. This will improve your overall health and keep you focused throughout your day.
Set clear goals: You can't do everything at once. This is where you need to set clear goals or targets so you can without stress accomplish your daily tasks. Importantly, you should be mindful of your daily accomplishments and consciously work towards those goals you have yet to achieve.
Value Relationships: In this sense, you need to stay connected to your loved ones, friends, colleagues and others who can practically, at any point in time, provide you with emotional support and help.
Although, self-care may not sufficiently be the cure for mental illness or stress but giving consideration to the aforementioned tips would to an extent help manage your mental health which would in turn affect your overall health.
