National Students Union Urges Government Action Against Unaccredited Courses

By Josephine

In a recent development, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has fervently called upon the Federal Government to take decisive action against institutions offering unaccredited courses.
This appeal follows the Federal Ministry of Education's suspension of the evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from the Republic of Benin and Togo.

The ministry's move, prompted by an undercover investigation conducted by a Nigerian newspaper, resulted in the blacklisting of approximately 18 learning institutions. The investigation sheds light on the activities of a degree mill in Cotonou, a major city in Benin Republic.

NANS National leader, Elvis Ekundina, has urged the Federal Government to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the operations of the Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission (NUC), National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and other implicated agencies involved in fraudulent activities related to obtaining foreign university degree certificates.

Ekundina specifically called for a spotlight on tertiary institutions, particularly privately-owned ones, running unaccredited courses. He accused these institutions of detrimentally impacting the sector and deceiving young Nigerians by offering courses lacking proper accreditation.

Furthermore, the union leader emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government, NANS, and other student bodies to eradicate illegal tertiary institutions.
This collaborative effort aims to reshape and enhance the nation's education sector, ensuring a more robust and accredited educational environment for students nationwide.
