Three Iconic Designers Making Waves in The Industry

By Ashabi

Fashion designers have always been at the helm of building the world of fashion. They've introduced new and diverging designs, they've been responsible for the happiness and style of many fashion lovers in the world. There hasn't been a time when fashion wasn’t buzzing with one new trend or design or style.

However, amongst the millions of fashion designers, brands that we have all over the world, there are those who have made a name for themselves with their remarkable innovations in the fashion world. At a point in time, what was in trend were baggy and long dresses for both male and female but now the trend is different and so we have with many imorovement in fashion. Have you ever wondered how this changes were brought in? How they began and who introduced them? Today, we are going to be discussing three iconic fashion designers and the innovative trend they brought into the fashion world.

‘Coco Chanel– The Daring, Free, Fashion Designer

We have all come across a fake Chanel logo at one time or the other but who is the Real Chanel and how did she change fashion? Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel was a French fashion designer who revolutionized women’s wear in the 20th century. The Chanel fashion House described Coco Chanel as an ‘extraordinary character; daring, free, and ahead of her time.'

In a time when women wore impractical and restrictive corseted gowns or skirts, Chanel brought her daring nature to her designs and introduced comfort and elegance to the women’s fashion scene. She created comfortable little black gowns; drew inspiration from menswear and popularized trousers for women; created the popular Chanel suit worn by historical figures like Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana. Chanel was known for defying fashion and gender norms by mixing traditional ideas of masculinity and femininity and prioritizing comfort. I bet the recent corset trend had her rolling in her grave.

‘Tom Ford- The American genius that revived Gucci’

The Gucci brand created by Guccio Gucci in the 20th century was known for designing leather goods until family feuds almost led the company down the path of bankruptcy. Then came Tom Ford, who revived the brand in the 21st century.

Tom Ford’s reign at Gucci didn’t involve creating new styles and items. Rather, he took inspiration from past designs and gave them a modern twist. And oh my, those twist definitely turned things around for Gucci. Tom Ford introduced the Gucci brand to sexy silhouettes; killer heels, form–fitting satin and velvets shirts, sleek velvet pantsuits, thigh-high slit dresses.

Celebrities from Madonna to Jennifer Lopez wore his designs repeatedly. Ford’s designs dominated and influenced the late 90’s and early 20’s until his departure from Gucci in 2004. Gucci’s rise to the top 3 of the biggest fashion brands in theworld wouldn’t have been possible without Tom Ford.

‘Giorgio Armani- Living Breathing Legend’

If Chanel is known for comfortable yet elegant designs and Ford for sexy and elegant luxurious wears, then Giorgio Armani is a perfect blend of both. Armani’s signature style is relaxed yet luxurious and elegant.

When you think Armani, think comfortable, minimal, elegant dresses and suits. He redefined fashion for men and women; he made menswear less rigid by making comfortable and relaxed suits while he created rigid power suits for women in a time when women wore soft and feminine suits.

The Italian didn’t stop there, he filled another gap by inventing red carpet dresses. Prior to Armani’s red carpet dresses in the 1980s, celebrities mostly wore casual wears to award shows. The now 89 years old designer spotted this gap and decided to dress celebrities in elegant and comfortable dresses or suits for the red carpet.

The international fashion designers that have changed fashion cannot be numbered; from Vivienne Westwood’s infusion of punk and fashion to Calvin Klein’s minimalist jeans to Vera Wang’s illustrious wedding gowns and many more. One thing is for certain their innovative designs will continue to influence future fashion designers, and their legacy cannot and would not die.
