In a recent development, the Postgraduate (PG) room in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Ibadan has been officially closed, sparking discussions among students across all levels.
The room, although designated for postgraduate students, had also become a popular study space for undergraduates due to its quiet atmosphere. However, it has been deemed unsuitable for academic use due to significant health and safety concerns.
The department's President confirmed that the closure was necessary, citing the deteriorating condition of the room. “The PG room was closed because its current state is not conducive to learning,” he said in an interview. Among the issues noted were a severe infestation of bedbugs in the chairs and faulty electrical fittings, both of which posed serious risks to students' safety.
Chibuike David, a first-year student who witnessed some of the issues firsthand, described the unsafe conditions. “I was there when the fans and sockets malfunctioned. The room's current state is not fit for learning,” he shared, echoing the concerns of many students who had previously used the space.
Vice President Adekanmi Gbade, who also frequently used the PG room, expressed his disappointment. “It's unfortunate that a space meant to facilitate our studies has become a risk to our well-being,” he said, calling attention to the urgency of the situation.
With the room now closed for renovations, philosophy students have been advised to seek alternative study spaces. However, the timeline for the room’s renovation remains uncertain. The President stated that while plans are in place for improvements, the renovation process has yet to begin. He assured students that once the details are finalized, they would be informed through the department's Public Relations Officer.
For now, the reopening date remains unknown as students await further updates from the department's management.
