NAPSPRESS: Can we meet you ?
Omowunmi: My name is Makinde Omowumi Iyanuoluwa, I am from Oyo State, a graduate of Philosophy, UI
NAPS PRESS: Did you choose Philosophy or Did Philosophy choose you ?
Omowunmi: I actually applied to study law, but Philosophy chose me
NAPS PRESS: Did you try crossing to Law?
Omowunmi: It was my plan to do that, but I realised that the department doesn't allow students to change discipline, so I gave the plan up.
NAPS PRESS: Wow interesting
As someone who has maintained a very high standard academic performance,
What is your motivation?
Omowunmi: "Whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well". This is a quote that has always been a huge motivation for me. In everything I do, I always put in my best efforts because there must be no room for failure
NAPS PRESS: How would you describe your feelings as been the Best Female Graduating Student in the department of philosophy?
Omowunmi: I'm just thankful and grateful really. It is every students goal, be it female or male, to graduate with excellent grades. This has always been the plan and the goal, so I am just excited for achieving exactly that.
NAPS PRESS; Having made a first class in UI, were you under any pressure whatsoever?
Omowunmi: No, I was never under any pressure. I am a very laid-back person. For me, it all boils down to doing the right thing at the right time. I always strike a balance between studying and other activities by making sure that none affects the other and being mindful at all times of my primary assignment.
NAPS PRESS: During your undergraduate years were you actively involved in extra curricular activities and how were you able to strike a balance between extra curricular activities and Academics
Omowunmi: No, I wasn't exactly actively involved in any extracurricular activities. The major activity I'd say I was actively involved in outside the classroom is church activities (if that would count as an EC) and as I've said earlier I made sure that none affected the other
NAPS PRESS: How were you able to handle distractions ?
Did you have a reading schedule ?
Omowunmi: For me, I see distraction as a choice. You either choose to be distracted or not. At the end of the day, it all boils down to striking a balance like I've pointed out earlier. We are all different, what would distract A is different from what would distract B.
And as regards reading schedule, I really didn't have any, I just take it a day at a time, all that matters is for me to understand what the lecturer taught in class first, once that has been established, the rest is easy. I only read during the day , I don't read overnight even when examinations are approaching or during examinations periods. This also shows how we are all different and what works for me may not work for another person
NAPS PRESS: What's your advice for undergraduates that are aspiring to have good grades in their course if study ?
Omowunmi: My advice for them is that they should be dedicated and focused, be mindful of their destination, be fearless and never take no for an answer, always believe in themselves and always strive for excellence
NAPS PRESS: What's next for Omowunmi?
Omowunmi: After my NYSC deployment, I plan to further my education outside the country.
NAPS PRESS: Is there anything you would want the department to improve on?
Omowunmi: Hmm, well, not all lecturers are easy to approach because of fear of the unknown. I think the department can put more effort in the student-lecturer relationship, because I believe that a good, healthy, ethical and professional relationship between lecturers and students can promote self-esteem and good academic performance.
NAPS PRESS: Shout outs?
Omowunmi: I'd love to give a shout out to my mum, Mrs O.Y. Makinde. Without her, all these wouldn't be possible, in fact without her I wouldn't be here, literally. Also to my siblings, I appreciate the support and all the words of encouragement. And to my friends and colleagues, I love you guys and I pray that we'll all meet at the top.
NAPS PRESS Thank you so much for your time
Miss Omowunmi
You are much appreciated
And we wish you the very best in all your endeavors
Thanks for having me. And to my lecturers and the department as a whole, I appreciate you all
