The matriculation speech for the
newly admitted student of the prestigious University of Ibadan was delivered by
Dr Boluwatife Ndidiamaka Ikwunne, a graduate from college of Medicine on the
16th of March 2021.
The speaker, Dr Boluwatife, the
winner of Rhodes Scholarship of West Africa and the second best in her class,
was admitted into Medicine and surgery in 2012. However, she resumed her
undergraduate program in January 2013
due to some delays just as the 2019/2020 matriculants witnessed delay because
of the pandemic and ASUU strike.
Dr Boluwatife congratulated the
matriculants for making it into the best University in West Africa. According
to her "the University of Ibadan is a top tier University, producing
legend in various fields of expertise".
She shared some tips which she
divided into ten keys based on personal experience which will help them
navigate their journey of four to six years in the Institution.
The first tip she shared was for them
to find their purpose. "Choosing your preferred course is the first step,
now comes the real work", he stated. He advised the matriculants to work
tirelessly and diligently in order to achieve their goals.
Failure, she said, should not stop
them from achieving their goals instead it should be the fuel that drives
students to success and this can only be achieved through perseverance.
Furthermore, being humble and working
smart should be encouraged as constructive criticism from seniors, colleagues
and others will help them to improve while teamwork such as tutorials, asking
questions will help them to retain and recall important information.
Making friends that have similar
aspirations will be a bedrock of support to them here on campus and later in
the future. She also advised them to be deliberate about their personal growth,
learning, exploration and making friends as these will serve as coping
strategies when there is a need to relieve themselves from stress.
Proper time management and
preparation cannot be overemphasized as these two prevent poor performance. She
implored the students to get involved in extra curricular activities but this
should not be prioritized.
Violating the school rules and
regulations might lead to rustication from the institution and this made her
advice the students to shun bad habits such as drug abuse, examination
malpractices, fighting and so on as these are ways to show kindness to oneself.
She admonished the matriculants not to
set standards based on strangers on social media, classmates, friends point of
view. He told them to set their goals by themselves and strive to attain them.
The last tip she gave was on health. She
implored the matriculants to pay attention to their mental, physical and
spiritual health. He plead with them to seek for help before they reach their
breaking point.
She ended her lecture with an
affectionate quote made popular by the great crème de la crème set of 2015
MB;BS, "if it is of UI, it must as a matter of necessity be of the best
quality".
