INTERVIEW- MEET SEYI PENCIL; FRESHER OF THE WEEK

 PRESS: Good day, Sir

Can we get to know you please?

Seyi Pencil:My name is

AkinwumijuOluwaseyi, popularly known as (Seyi Pencil). A 100level student of the philosophy department.

PRESS : Seyi Pencil, you are welcome into the circle of the intelligentsia. If I may ask, how did you come about the alias; Seyi Pencil?

Seyi Pencil:Okay, it is actually my art name. I am an artist that focuses on pencil works and also a conceptual artist in a genre of art called hyperrealism. So working with pencils only, I then try to link that with my birth name Seyi and that’s how the name Seyi Pencil came up.

PRESS : Wow! beautiful. Can you brief us on your academic background and how you found your way into UI, and into the department of philosophy precisely?

Seyi Pencil: Just like every student, the race for University started from secondary school. I’ve always had that interestin schooling at UI. So basically I attended a government secondary school that's also called a public school which is Community Secondary School Sango,Ibadan. I love my school I think the pressure and stress I went through back then shaped my focus

I wrote the  my JAMB exam twice. The first in 2018 and the second in 2019 after I was not offered admission in 2018. Philosophy naturally was not my first choice but I was advised by my tutor to go for the course.

PRESS: So, MrSeyi Pencil, having to begin your first year in the University on a virtual mode, do you have any fear concerning this like some other freshmen?

Seyi Pencil: Yes I do, and on the other hand, I don't

PRESS: So do your parents fully support you studying philosophy?I mean, so many parents think studying philosophy automatically makes you become an atheist, do they have this conception too?

Seyi Pencil: Yesbut they are supportive of whatever decision and choice I make, as long as I can deal with it. However, I don't really think I can condemn God or something like that. It's just course of study I can cope with and they can too.

PRESS:So, let's talk about your art.Is it hereditary or it's just an exclusive special gift for you?

Seyi Pencil: Just a special gift from God which I worked on it with consistent practice.

PRESS: So, when did the journey begin for you?And with a close estimate, how many pieces of art have you produced?

Seyi Pencil: Drawing for me, 2018.But in 2017 I learnt sculpture art after I was done with secondary school. I only learnt sculptures drawing because it was after I got to the training did I found out that that's what they do there. I initially went to learn more about drawing.

I started my own art officially in 2018, I didn't go out to learn or anything, just worked on myself. I'm what people may refer to as; Self taught Artist. From 2018 till date, I've done more than 50 pieces(both personal and commissioned pieces)

PRESS: Impressive! You must be a nerd, or let's say a prolific genius.

Seyi Pencil: I am honored, just trying my best.

PRESS: So, as an artist, what's your muse? Or let me say source of inspiration?

Seyi Pencil: My family background first.Basically my mum also did little of art when she was little. She’s always supportive. And also, my society, human existence inspires me. By the way, my Mom bought me my first set of pencils which I still have with me though, jst for memories. (smiles)

PRESS : That's amazing. So, how do you intend to balance arts with studies?

Seyi Pencil: I ask myself thissame question.I believe I can cope with the stress I just have to balance both, set a good time for both. I would have to work  art at night if I study the whole day. I am used to the stress already.

PRESS:You seems to have a good strategy in place already.

Seyi Pencil: Sure, thanks.

PRESS:Have you had your works published on any Social Media platform before?

Seyi Pencil: Yes, opera news. It also on my IG page.

PRESS: Can you share with us your IG page so your course mates can see more of your craft?
