Recently, a global list identifying the world's top 2% scientists in various disciplines, was realised by Stanford University. The exhaustive list created by experts at Stanford University together with the publishing house Elsevier and SciTech Strategies, contains over 100,000 names of scientists from around the world whose publications and writings are most often cited by other authors. The list was created by the University using a cumulative career index citation as a guide, with the aim to provide a comprehensive database of a sufficiently large number of the most cited scientists.
Included among the over 100,000 listed names of top scientists around the world, are 8 lecturers from the University of Ibadan. This was made known by the university, through a tweet on its official Twitter page. Which reads;
"Following the recent world ranking of scientists (top 2%), it is a pleasure to inform you that the following are UI greats made the list:
Prof. Gureje, Prof. Farombi, Prof. B.O Osuntokun, Prof. Iruka Okeke, Prof. Akin Sowumi, Prof. L. Salami, Prof. S. A Odunfa, Prof O. Ekundayo"
The university congratulated each one of them and also expressed how heartwarming it was to note that Prof. Oye Gureje, a professor of psychiatry and also the director of World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre of research and Training in Mental Health Neurosciences, Drug and Alcohol of the university, ranked No. 1 in the field of Psychiatry and also Prof. Olatunde Farombi, a professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Toxicology, who ranked No.1 Toxicologist in Nigeria and top 1% in the world.
