The
condition of electricity in Nigeria since time immemorial has been nothing to
write home about. However, recently, the condition worsened and has become an
enormous issue of concern amongst people, especially students of the University
of Ibadan, who now attend virtual classes, where electricity amongst other
things is a key factor in ensuring the successful attendance of their classes.
Within the
University and communities surrounding it, electricity has become a “Once in a
blue moon” thing, with students wondering and hoping when next the
ever-30-minutes-long light would return from its self-sent exile.
If the issue
persists without any hope of returning to normalcy, quite a number of students
would be affected. Many will miss classes and not meet up to the 75% attendance
which the institution is known for, a lot more will miss tests if they are held
online.
In addition,
this would place so much stress on students as they would go around scouting
for places to charge their devices. This, coupled with insecurity issues would
lead to the loss of many students’ devises.
How then do
we cope? Nobody knows. But “las las” as students say, “we go dey
alright.”
