A LETTER TO MENTAL HEALTH

 A LETTER TO MENTAL HEALTH

Currently every activity seems to be having a direct dialogue with our brain, the strains and stress deposited in our brain seems to be recurrent, it is like never before, our energy is more sapped and even though we have lesser physically engaging activities, we feel twice much stressful. We are trapped within the world of self-development, the pandemic and a healthy lifestyle, we are challenged to grow, stay safe and preserve our state of mind or better put our mental health. Each and every day we wake up to realizing that our social structure is being compromised and that the norm is gradually becoming a rarity being pushed away by a newly awakened consciousness of a distant lifestyle or in my own words a virtual existence. We all still bear the brunt of the coronal virus outbreak and for some we have not only become distant from others, we are also distant from our self, the social balance we enjoyed seems to be fluctuating.

How is schooling? and how are you? Questions, students will relate to almost in the same way, a common response is; “I am not fine, but last-last we go dey alright” also some students will say with regards to the ongoing classes that; “I am in the class, but not in the class” simply put they are expressing their plight about the virtual classes to be ineffective and less productive. Some students clamor for a return of physical classes on the premise that the university is not fully prepared to launch an effective virtually driven lecturing system. A lot of student have even expressed their fears with regards to the fact that exams are likely to commence the next month, that is, the Month of May and they are yet to consolidate their studies or even have a grasp or understanding of what it is there are been taught, some students say they are mentally drained and for some they are unsure of their stand in this supposed virtually driven semester, some students have even out rightly exclaimed that they are mentally unstable and far from been healthy because of the strain and exhaustion they get from the virtual class as well as the strain that comes with the financial demands to keep up.

Well, a little advice for everyone, our mental health is very important, thus, we need to stay mentally healthy and focused. Some of the things to consider is having a good sleep. It is no news that at this period in time having to sleep sound like a no-no, but really when one over works his or her brain the fatigue sets in thus, affecting our performances and responses to in other areas of our life. No sleep means bad mental health, the brain need rest. We should also know that outside sleeping, we need to develop the habit of working and relaxing, that is, learning to relax even when we are working, this sound quite unachievable but it is, remember how you are able to watch TV and still relax or how you are able to read or play games and still relax, the principle is quite the same, do the work but never think of it as being strenuous, find a way to enjoy whatever you are doing.

Our attitude towards our activities is very important to achieving success, thus, our attitude towards self-development is key to our success in life. Currently all signals point to the fact that he/she who is not skilled is at a very big disadvantage of survival, our economy gets worse on a daily basis, prices continually increases and opportunities gets fewer. All these tells us that the race is tougher and can only get even much tougher. As developments, advancement, discoveries and urbanization sets in deeper into the frame work of the society human labor is more and more less needed, that is, machines are taking charge of almost all our work. In turn more humans are getting unemployed because they lack the skill set required to either build a machine, operate one, manage one or understand one. The world is become more technologically advance and for you to thrive in such world, one must be technologically sound, that is, invest in yourself by reading books, take courses, be concerned about your environment and never stop growing and developing your mental capacity and skill.

Also, it is important to pay attention to our soft skills such as emotional intelligence, time management, negotiation, network building etc. Yes, we have limited contact with people now, but we will always be in contact with people, that is because man cannot do without each other “I am because you are or we are because they are” the existence of man can only be because other men exist, as such, it is important to work on that part of us that will help foster a better relationship and partnership between other men.

Finally, despite the trials and challenges that is being faced during this period, one mustn’t fail to mention that it is a period packed with opportunities, the opportunity to reevaluate our lifestyle, the opportunity to learn to survive, the opportunity to build oneself, the opportunity to prepare for better times, the opportunity to sort for more chances and opportunities such as getting equipped with technical skills, seeking better experiences, working on businesses, prepare for our exams etc. Now that the opportunity is here it is important that we learn to seize it, that we must learn to be ready always so when opportunities come our way we will be able to grab it and utilize it effectively.
