THE SOUNDS OF FAILURE
Music is the combination
of organized noises and noises are just sounds, sounds that can be likened to
distractions. Everywhere, now and then we are faced with multiple distractions,
that is, lots of noises from different directions and dimensions forming a part
of our existence and everyday life. At different points in our journey through
life, these noises become very prominent and might even tend to sway or result
in loss of focus. The sounds of failure are like rolling drums echoing in the
depth of every individuals’ heart, at times it materializes pasting its musical
notations on ones’ activities, some other time it is just an undertone
accompanying and fanning into flames the drive for success, and then it could
be a storm, a stumbling block, a disaster, a barricade or even fate. But then
even fate can be altered. We need not fail but we need failure, we need to see
that there is a better way out, that there is an alternative or that we can do
better, the rumbling of failure is necessary to keep the sparks of success ever
ignited.
About an ignited success,
we have seen a little ray from the executive body of Philosophy department,
well we hope their effort on the organized tutorial will be sustainable.
Looking further, the executive body of Faculty of Arts seems to be pulling
strings by trying to stay in contact with first year students as well as
provide mediums to ease the data subscription plan of Faculty of Arts students,
thus, creating that silver lining for a possible ignition of success. They still
have a lot to work on such as better maintenance of the Faculty website,
building a better inter-departmental relation, helping to boost the activities
of the Faculty Press, looking into better ways and medium to disseminate
information more effectively to students etc. They are setting a pace for other
departmental executive and living to propel a success driving faculty that has
leant and is still learning from the sounds of failure played by the past of
the executive tree.
The sounds reverbs’
resonating the activities of the Students Union executives, the higher the
jurisdiction, the more the responsibilities, and the need to be more answerable
and accountable. The Student Union executives have been quite active in their
roles and duties, and they have been attentive to the students’ plea, opinions
and outcry back dating from the lockdown action against the unjust treatment of
a company towards the death of a staff who happened to be a student of UI, the
end SARS protest, the Covid-19 walk and sensitization, the distribution of the
relief palliatives, the push for resumption, the effort to push for a
subsidized accommodation fee outside school, the effort to help students have a
soft landing resumption by disseminating information as at when due, very recent
the effort to push for a shift of deadlines for payment of school fees and the
cancelation of the extra charges or fee late payment of school fee attracts
etc. it is only appropriate that this be the case, that the body with a higher
jurisdiction work better and harder. However, when the tunnel is bigger and
farther, reach the beam of light takes more time and then the echoes grow
louder. That is, the sounds of failure echo even louder for the Students Union
executives, for their failure becomes a shared failure, thus, the Student Union
needs to look into working to create a better cemented and people driven
success goal, they need to carry all along, that is, to work on a “all for one”
driven system of governing because just has it is held in the tenets of Ubuntu,
we are because you are and you are because we are. And always remember “Big
brother is watching”, learn from the past and never forget the future, the
rumbling sound of failure is eternal.
Also, to the mother body,
the great University of Ibadan, doing her best to keep her compartments
together as well as trying to keep her works and activities flowing in the
right direction. Her head is up high and her shoulders raised watching her
fruits yield positive results and accomplish greater height like when some of
her students won the Rhodes Scholarship and when some of her students came out
as the best in Nigeria Law school etc. But still currently it seems the pole of
leadership needs to be cemented and properly erected because the school is
currently experiencing a slight discord in its dispensation of functions and
duties resulting to slow responses to issues, such as, the clamor of physical
classes, the posting of the outgoing final year students name to NYSC, the
disarray on the school website overtime, the strengthen of the online platform
for a better and more effective learning experience, the need to orientate and
help lecturers adjust to the new online lecture policy etc. well despite all
these, the school is still pushing hard to maintain her legacy of being the
first and the best she was able to commission new departments and buildings to
further help facilitate a better educational experience. Although, these
buildings are not currently functional or in use and the departments have not
started their activities fully we hope they do not become dormant like the
supposed building for business school. In as much as there is a lot to do and a
lot more burden on the school, relenting is not an option, and more needs to be
done to keep the proud standard and legacy of this great citadel of learning.
Furthermore, a citadel of
learning is only as good as its students, students makes up the chunk of what
we call a citadel of learning and the attitude and disposition of students
influences the outcome or result of what the citadel hopes to achieve, which is
success in grooming and producing worthy and honorable students to help better
the society, their self, as well as help better the school. That is, to give
back to the society, to give back to them self, and to give back to the school.
Great students are not born they are made. As students, it is important to put
in enough effort to ensure that all that a school aims to teach and impact is
effectively digested, utilized, and improved upon. Now the school and students
alike are going through a seemingly though time, where everybody has to adjust
to a digital era or better put a virtually driven system of lecturing and
impacting knowledge, it is a trying time, but it is necessary that students
have an open mind to this system and try as much as possible to make the best
out of it. The urge to be unserious, to give up, to be bored, to not give a
dime will all come, but to give in to these feeling isn’t right because at an
appropriate time the herculean task to test our knowledge and positions would
erupt ad we might either be spectators to a dance of failure or partakers in
the dance of failure, either ways the drums that rolls out the sounds of
failure never seize.
Finally, there is the
recall of our consciences, our minds, our self, and our person together to be
more composed and coordinated, to keep fighting and never to give up, to seek
knowledge and never settle for less, to advance further and not to regress, to
work better, get better, be better and not to give in to the rhythm of failure.
If life be worth living, then its travails should be worth our struggle, if
education is the best part to trod, then the fight against obstacles should
worth our strength. Let all students see, let them hear and feel that the
pressure of lack of preparedness can be combated, if only we take heed to the
sounds of failure that echoes and tries to awaken the consciousness of all that
success is the trump card and the ultimate music, failure is noise, that noise
that you need not have if only you can coordinate past experiences to gain
better foresight.
