Federal Government Extends Deadline Again?
According to the news article released by The Nations on the 4th of May, the Federal Government has approved 30th of June as the new deadline for the linkage of Subscribers Identity Module (SIM) cards with the National Identity Numbers (NIN) as contained in a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Dr Ikechukwu Adinde and Mr Kayode Adegoke, the Head of Corporate Communications of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
According to the government, 54 million Nigerians have obtained their identity number which means a total of 190 million mobile numbers.
The postponement was approved in order to make it easier for all citizens and legal residents to register.
In addition, the deployment of Android enrolment system and various registration centres across the country are being put in place so as to accelerate the speed and ease of enrolments.
Just as the use of Social Security Number and National Insurance Number are being used in United States and United Kingdom respectively, the National Identity Number according to the sections 27 and 29 of National Identity Management Commission Act 2007 make use of the NIN to access several government services.
As written in the statement, " The Federal Government has approved the extension as part of its effort to make it easier for its citizens and residents to obtain the NIN and it is important to take advantage of the extension". Will this be the last extension? we hope not
