AFAS Press holds workshop for campus journalists
The workshop which was made open to members of every press organization in UI, took place at the Faculty of Arts, Room 71. The program was tagged “catching up with the changing phases of journalism”
The Editor-in-chief of AFAS press, Miss Lolade Olu-Ojegbeje gave the opening address of the workshop and explained that it is a mini training for campus journalists that takes place annually. Hence, this why they have invited different journalists from different press organizations. She stated further that journalism profession is an evolving profession, and that is why the theme had been chosen.
Present at the event was Mr Ifedayo Ogunyemi, Senior Reporter for the Tribune, who spoke on the topic: ‘ethical news gathering and reporting’. In his explanation, he spoke on the kind of news sources that must be protected. He also stressed on the need to gather news legally.
The second speaker of the event, Mr Ibrahim Alawode, a Fact-checker for Ripples Nigeria, spoke on fact-checking as one of the new evolutions of journalism. In his lecture, he distinguished between fact-checking and news reporting, factchecking and verification among others. He also spoke about the skill sets that aspiring fact-checkers must possess.
A panel session was held during the program. The session featured Miss Fasilat Rauf, the president of UCJUI, Mr Kareem Shamsudeen, the Editor-in-chief of UCJUI and the two speakers of the event.
