Last week, on my way home from school under the scorching sun, a car pulled up beside me, asking to give me a ride. Although it was a kind offer that I would have jumped at because the sun was burning my skin and I was too tired to leg the remaining journey to my house. I looked at the gentleman who was asking me to hop into his car, and his looks made the offer more welcoming and without a second thought, I reached for the car door. But my chi whispered in my ear “This is Nigeria.” Without a rethink I turned down the offer, knowing very well that accepting the free ride could land me into the den of kidnappers or even get me robbed or raped. On the one hand, I thought of my parents trying to gather millions to pay for ransom, on the other hand, I imagined myself cut up into pieces for rituals!!! I did not like my imaginations at that time, I am too Nigerian to be accepting free rides any how.
Upon my thoughts and imagination, I smiled back at the gentleman and told him I would not be able to join him in his car. I was not going to let looks deceive me as per dem no dey write “Ritualist” or “Kidnapper” for forehead. The sexy looking young man could be a kidnapper, and his fine face could have covered perfectly for him.
This is Nigeria where everybody suspects everybody. Not just I, but every other person needs to learn to be security conscious. Do not trust looks, avoid things that can expose you to insecurities. Let’s be guided.
