One's mental wellness is constantly compromised by current events, such as banditry, kidnappings, fuel shortages, inflation, and poor governance. Some people use social media to distract themselves from upsetting situations they cannot control.There are times when seeing outside through the skewed glass of social media is the only way to escape suffocating seclusion. The glitz and glam that never stops coming from the gram and the raw, jaw-dropping content and violence on the bird app provide us with an endless stream of unfiltered yet distilled drinks of what every other person's life looks like or is experiencing.
But social media remains unfiltered, no matter how many camera filters are used. Both the admirable qualities and the terrible aspects of life are exposed.
And with that, our escape from inactivity plunges us into the corroded web of toxins and needless negative energy on media space. Although we are fully aware that the earth has its share of gloomy valleys. There is absolutely no need for us to pretend that life itself is full of peaches and roses. It’s safe to say that social media tend to show us both two sides to life, it is left to one to make a meaning out of what one sees. Imagine how dreadful social media would be if it has too many saddening happenings on it. It is harmful to consume an excessive amount of poisonous news on social media platforms but here are tips that can be used to manage this;
- Try to be as sensible as you can when processing the information you get, especially with bad news because there is no much you can do to change what has already occurred. Pray for it not to reoccur if you are inclined toward the spiritual. Express sympathy, but refrain from overly personalizing. Understand that some news often presents a misleading perspective of the world.
- Take breaks; it’s advised to avoid the internet if you can. It gives you the opportunity to center yourself and your mental health before the social media seas wash it off course. Let your perspective of the world become distorted by your positive attitude. At any time, choose optimism over pessimism; doing so does not imply that you lack realism.
- Be careful not to join the group of people who spread unfavorable stories to gain attention or who abuse people on social media. Don’t be one of the culprits—you are aware of how stressful addressing this is. Be sympathetic, considerate, and kind.
- Plan out your idleness; you might be under pressure to read a lot of school related works and all but always remember that the requirement for a breathing room in the brain is necessary, but we must maintain control over these areas because it is innately simpler for the mind to wander down a risky route. So instead of spending your whole day on reading news story that can affect your mental wellness, it’s advisable you watch comedy skits or snippets from shows that will make you laugh, go to bed, read a short narrative, look through your course materials, view some trendingvideos, or read motivational articles.
