When we go on holidays, one of our main objectives is disconnecting from the world. We escape for a while from routine and stress, to recharge batteries and release tension. If you want to revitalize yourself to the fullest, we advise you to gather a collection of books to accompany you on your holiday break.
Many of us look forward to the holiday break as a time to relax with our families. To eat delicious food, watch festive films, and spend time with our distant relatives. We definitely think that some down time is needed, but it’s also important to keep educational practices going during the break. To keep reading progress moving in a positive direction, and have some fun along the way, try as much as possible to find a balance. This is an opportunity to be away from deadlines.
The holiday break is a perfect time to practise slow reading. The first step to do that is: Don’t overcommit to how much you’re going to read. It may be best not to commit to reading anything specific at all. Simply pick one or two books/articles as points of departure, and see where curiosity takes you from there.
Make it a point to read slowly and to fully absorb the message. Stop at the passages that you find insightful. Re-read a particularly beautiful paragraph. This time it’s all about quality, not quantity. You are encouraged to pick your holiday reads based on your actual interests and what you think you “should” read. Don’t use arguments such as that a certain book is not “ambitious” or “useful” enough. The university will be rounding up the semester in short time.
Although it is important to get out of your comfort zone and study, it is equally important to not feel pressured by our peers and expectation of family. Give yourself breaks and enjoy the process of learning and acquiring knowledge for your own self. Remember that reading during break is supposed to be fun and relaxing. Don’t make it into another chore. Read slow. Read actively. Read whatever you like. Maybe you’ll discover a new way of reading that you can take with you when you resume.
