Dear Napsites,
It's second semester and just like in a twinkle of an eye, 3 weeks have passed and here we are in the fourth week, with physical lectures flooding in, in high torrents. Coupled with the ever-heavy academic workload, second semesters are usually filled with different social activities and events across different departments of the University.
Thus, it is a period when every UIte on the one hand struggles to survive academically while also maintaining a social life in the process, without one affecting the other. It is the time of the year when students look forward to fun activities hosted by their departmental executives, and just like every other student in the University of Ibadan is anticipating these events, student of the department of Philosophy also cannot wait to unbox the surprises that their executives have planned for them. However, as the mouth piece of concerned Napsites, the press through this editorial has compiled a list of activities that NAPSites should expect in this second semester. The events to look out for include the Symposium and Debate, Naps Week and Dinner.
The Symposium and Debate are major events to look forward to. Being a one-of-its-kind event, the debate will be an inter-level debate and is scheduled to hold on the 12th April for the first leg, while the second and final leg is scheduled to hold on the 17th of April. As stated in the special release, "The debate shall be between 100 and 200 level constituencies, and 300 and 400 level constituencies. The constituency in the two groups with higher scores shall proceed to the final stage. The constituency that wins in the finals will be awarded the prize of Forty Thousand Naira Only (#40,000.00)."
DETAILS OF THE DEBATE FIRST ROUND
Debate topic: A Philosophical Exploration: Can change and Permanence coexist?
While 200 level constituency is expected to propose, the 100level constituency is expected to oppose the motion respectively.
Debate Topic: Should individuals have the right to die with dignity through assisted suicide or euthanasia?
The 300 level constituency is to propose the motion while 400level constituency is to oppose the motion.
For Naps week, activities to expect are yet to be disclosed by the executive council, and for the dinner, the President of the department, Miss Peggie Umoh mentioned in a brief interviewthat the past administration was unable to organize the dinner party because of the low turnout of staylites in terms of paying their dues. By implication, it is expedient that Napsites pay their dues early enough to support the executive council in organising every social activity and event scheduled for the semester. The Vice President Ighofose Eseoghene Naomi once said on the behalf of the Executives “This is going to be the best tenure in the history of our department”. We really hope that in coming days, we can hold our executives accountable to their words.
Just like always, second semester is a time to strike a perfect balance between academics and social activities, without one affecting the other. To the first year students, congratulations on your second step towards being staylites, while to the finalists, it's just one more lap to go, give it what it takes and end these 6 long years with pride.
