It is no longer news that one of the biggest, exciting and most anticipated social event in the University of Ibadan, JAW WAR, has begun.
As it has been the custom, the Literary and Debating Society of the University of Ibadan organizes another debate competition,#JAW War'23, for the year and the session. JAW WAR is known to be the biggest public speaking competition in Sub-Saharan Africa. The competition is usually between the halls of residence in the school and between faculties in the school. Then, on the last day, it will be an inter-university debate.
The debate competition for this year kickstarted on Tuesday, 11 April, 2023, at the New Faculty Lecture Theatre, NFLT, Faculty of Technology, with the first leg of the inter-hall debate. With the different speakers from each hall of residence debating on wonderful topics and important topics, the results for the first leg came out as; Idia Hall : 65.2% vs Independence Hall: 66.8%, Zik : 65% Vs Queens: 59%, ABH :63.83% vs KUTI: 67%, TEDDER : 66.8% Vs AWO: 65.67% and lastly, MELLANBY : 69.3% vs BELLO: 75.1%.
One of the most anticipated and interesting part of JAW WAR are the relatable bants, speakers throw at one another in other to buttress their points, while debating and of course the wonderful Speakers representing each halls and Faculties, this year, did not let the audience down, in that aspect. Probably, one of the most memorable banter for many, during the first fixture of the inter-hall debate, would have been the statement from Aweda Bolaji while speaking for Tedder Hall "The problem with Healthcare in Nigeria is like Awoites and transportation problem."
Following this, on Thursday, 13 April, 2023, the first leg of the Inter-faculty debate took place, at the same venue, NFLT, Faculty of Tech and here two Speakers each represented the 12 Faculties of the premiere University. At the end of the day, we had the mothering Faculty of Education losing to the Faculty of Agriculture by 64%, and the Faculty of Agric winning on a close call with 64.75%, the faculty of Engineers, TECHNOLOGY winning the Medical sciences with 63.75% vs 62%, the Clinical Sciences wining Dentistry with 63% vs 60%, the Sciences losing to the premier Faculty, Arts with 56.5% vs 63.75%, VET MED. losing to the Faculty of Environmental Design with 50.25% vs 55.75 and lastly, the Faculty of Economics wining Public Health with 62.75 vs 60.75.
In anticipation of the finals, the Inter-hall second leg fixtures was held on Friday, 15th of April, 2023 and after so many tussle of words, jabs and bants amongst the debaters, snapping of fingers and shouts from the audience, that day's debate came to an end with Kuti hall winning Abdulsalami hall with 68.23% and ABH - 65.83%, Indy hall winning Idia hall with 65.556% and Idia hall - 63.1%, Zik hall winning Queens with 65.25% ; Queens hall - 57.7%, Bello hall winning Mellanby with 69. 64%; Mellanby hall- 66.49% and lastly, Awo hall hitting Tedder hall hard, with her comeback; Awo hall- 68.9% & Tedder hall - 67.23%.
Tedder hall was announced the best loser.
