Bringing Odelela Attire to the Spotlight

By Ashabi
Namibia, a country in the southwestern part of Africa is known for its desert and wildlife, but there is one hidden treasure in the driest country in Africa;  the Odelela attire of the Ovambo tribe.

There are arrays of rich cultural fabrics such as aso-oke, ankara, kente and other popular attires that complement the beautiful continent, Africa. Due to this, attires of other cultures with smaller populations do not reach the spotlight. Odelela attire is one of such.

The Odelela is a bright coloured fabric often sewn into free gown/skirt and short sleeves. The beauty of the gown doesn't lie in the shape or in the intricacies but in the colour of the fabric which is like no other on the continent. The rich colour of pink mixed with a dash of red and black hues fill the fabric. This mix of colours gives the wearer an exceptionally simple look. The colours leave no room for extravagant styling as the fabric gives off more than enough extravaganza.

The attire is also exquisite for its production process because it  is handmade and hand dyed. It is mostly worn at wedding ceremonies and decorated with matching scarfs, necklaces made with beads and shells. The Odelela is a must have for lovers of culture and colourful fabrics.
