The Department of Philosophy was touted as one of the title contenders
for the Seals Cup 2023 after finishing in second place last session. Bar a
disappointing outing against first-timers MBBS, the Faculty of Arts champions
have had a run of champions throughout the tournament, stamping their authority
through technical gameplay and ruthless finishing.
John
opened the scoring on Monday, October 23, 2023, as he converted a spot-kick
that gave his team the lead in the first half. The Philosophy kept a thoroughly
effective backline throughout the game, preventing the Computer Science key
players George and Grealish from creating channels through the backline.
The
second half resumed, and Philosophy was still not letting up on the press. They
seemed to be everywhere at once, and Computer Science was constantly
second-best for most of the second half. Awolowo and Prime terrorized the
Computer Science team with set pieces, taking aim at the goal from over 30
yards at times and sending in long balls that kept the defenders busy.
Computer
Science’s hopes were all but thrown out the window after John’s second goal, as
the striker controlled a throw-in on the spin and sent a looping effort into
the back of the net, leaving the Computer Science goalie helpless in goal.
Computer Science still kept going for a goal, and one indeed came, but it was
more of a consolation.
Grealish played in a through-ball, and the Philosophy defenders couldn’t deal with it well enough. They brought down a Computer Science attacker, and the referee pointed to the spot almost immediately. Captain Grealish stepped up to the penalty spot and confidently sent his kick, halving the deficit on the scoreboard.
But
that was to be the last act of the game, as the full-time whistle went off
right after the kickoff. Philosophy is set for a second final in two sessions,
and while they are at it. Computer Science will battle MBBS for third place, as
the Medics fell to a shocking defeat at the hands of Political Science. The
Political Science goalie, Olami, was key to the FATSSA team’s progression, and
it is going to be another FATSSA/AFAS showdown in this year’s Seals Cup final.
The
Plato Academy could very well clinch the trophy and we will be there for all
the action. Friday is the day; be at SUB to watch the Plato Academy race for
the trophy.
