Ruckus on SUB as Videographer aggravates Philosophers' loss

Segun Itakorode

It was a day not to forget for the Philosophy champions as they suffered a 3-0 loss to MBBS team in their SEALS Cup fixture, despite giving MBBS a good run throughout the game.

The loss was further aggravated by loose conduct from a member of the media team, which resulted in Philosophy fans rising up against the offender and the Seals Cup media team. It took intervention from the head of media for the competition to resolve the situation, as the fans wanted an apology from the offending videographer.

As the match came to an end, a videographer stepped out of line while taking videos on the pitch. Emotions were high at the time, particularly among Philosophy fans, and the situation escalated to a full-blown crisis on the pitch.

The Seals Cup organizing committee took swift action to nip the issue in the bud, however, getting the appropriate authorities involved, as the affected Philosophy students received a verbal apology from the offending videographer, as well as a formal letter of apology from the Seals Cup organizers.

As an aftermath, the videographer got his punishment directly from the Sports Council, as the organizers promised to keep a professional standard in all departments of the competition going forward.

Philosophy has enjoyed the spotlight in UI football in the past few sessions, and most fans tipped the team to race past the MBBS squad on Thursday, 5 October 2023. Their 3-5-2 set-up has been effective in competitions all over campus, and Philosophy looked set for a comfortable victory at SUB.

Post-match reactions from various Philosophy players hinted that the penalty that led to the first goal was controversial, and the team morale dipped from that point. However, they claimed responsibility for switching off in the second half.

By the second half, MBBS had grown into the game, gaining more confidence and pegging the Philosophy team in their own half. Defensive errors and fouls helped MBBS build a flow to their attack.

Philosophy will hope for better results next time out, as they will be taking on Adult Education in their quest for qualification from the group stage. They currently sit behind MBBS in the group standings with three points, as fellow group members Mechanical Engineering and Adult Education are yet to face off.
