The Philosophy team is the first team to get to the quarter-finals in
this year's Seals Cup. It was a tense affair in the Philosophy camp after their
group stage didn't go as planned, but the players have shown grit and
resilience to bounce back from the minor disturbances and get the job done.
The Philosophy fixture with Educational Management started the round of 16 stages, ending in a 2 - 0 win featuring goals from John and Keye. Many have called the Philosophy team's quality into question, particularly after their humbling loss to MBBS, but Plato Academy has been on hand to prove them wrong time and time again.
John and Awolowo have been deadly in the final third throughout the competition, and their devastating combo was the highlight of the game against Educational Management on Monday, 16 October 2023. Awolowo floated in a delicate cross-field pass to meet John's well-timed run, and the striker pulled off a stunning volley that stung the goalkeeper's hands on its way in. The goal rolled back the years, replicating a Rooney-Van-Persie connection in 2013 that sealed the Premier League for the Red Devils against Aston Villa.
There was significantly more confidence in the Philosophy camp after that, and the second goal came in the second half to seal the quarterfinals for Philosophy. Keye got his first goal of the tournament, and most spectators will agree it is well deserved. The midfielder capped his excellent outing with a goal and will be looking to contribute more to the team's success.
Sociology were not so lucky in their game against IPE, as the Tech giants ran away with a slim 1 - 0 win in an otherwise quiet game. IPE had the upper hand in terms of pressure, but the Sociology defense had been doing so well before the goal came in.
Paragon had too much time to get the corner kick cross under control, enough to flick the ball past the Sociology keeper to get his side a place in the last 8. The Sociology team lacked intensity and they were severely punished for not getting out more with that lone goal.
The fixture between Psychology and Chemistry was moved to Wednesday due to the unavailability of most players in the Chemistry squad. Microbiology players also lodged a complaint of unavailability and had their match against MBBS moved to Tuesday, although the MBBS squad expressed grievances at being informed too late.
The quarterfinals begin on Thursday, October 19, 2023, and Philosophy will face the winners of the Psychology versus Chemistry game. Initially, it was a question of whether Philosophy could leave their group stage–now, it's anyone's guess how far they will go this year.
