Cast furtive glances behind as he stepped out into the street. It was a little past 7 pm and he had to get back home in time to prepare for work tomorrow. He’d have ordered a ride from the gate of The Douglas’s mansion, but he had decided against it, hence this long walk he was taking. He was surprised he could still walk. Mrs Douglas had literally drained the life out of him. He had heard about middle-aged women and their voracious appetites, he’d even experienced a few but
Mrs Douglas was by far the most tasking to deal with.
Akin smiled. He was not innocent. 28, Handsome, charming with a killer smile that could disarm most women. He knew he had immense appeal and was not shy about using it. Even with the older ladies, he played around with. They offered much more benefits and wanted no commitments—just how he liked to live his life. Most women his age and even younger wanted marriage. What was all the fuss for? Imagine being stuck to one woman at his age. The thought nearly drove him crazy. Variety was the spice of life. Marriage certainly wasn’t all that if all the older women he slept with were any indication. Bored, sex-starved and lonely, the lot of them. He was only too happy to take them out of their misery if only for a few hours. He was perfectly capable.
Pride swelled up in his chest. Mrs Douglas had told him he was amazing. Not like he didn’t know but it didn’t hurt to hear it all the time. She had told him to call her Debola when they were together. He remembered all the events leading up to the moment. She was the wife of Mr Douglas, one of the top managers at the firm where he worked. He was a sour-looking man and not well-liked in the company but nobody could deny that he was good at what he did. Three months ago, the firm held a party to celebrate the signing of a major deal. Mr Douglas had been instrumental towards closing the deal so he had been called to give a little speech and a toast. He had mounted the podium with his wife by his side.
Damn was she beautiful. 42 with a few lines of age already visible on her face but she looked amazing with a figure that hardly showed she had had 4 children. She would have turned heads when she was much younger. He couldn’t help but wonder how she’d ended up with a stone-faced old man like Mr Douglas. He had gone to congratulate Mr Douglas with a few other colleagues. He didn’t pass up the opportunity to pass his wife a compliment which earned him a very big smile. For the rest of the party, as champagne flowed, she sent him a few coy looks. Tobi, the one person he could call a friend at the office had even teased him about it.
“My guy, Mrs Douglas has the hots for you. See the way she dey look you now”.
He had brushed it off and called Tobi crazy. But he knew it was true. A few days later, he had received a text from a number he didn’t recognise. How she got his number, he didn’t know. But that’s what he liked about older women. They had gone past the age of wanting to be chased. If they wanted something, they were deliberate.
He found their conversations stimulating. She was obviously very intelligent but knew how to keep things interesting with a few unsolicited steamy pictures. They had been bidding their time until today when she had managed to chase everyone out of the house including Ahmed the nosy gateman her husband had hired. It was amazing really, she was everything she’d promised she’d be and some more. And well, here he was with a stupid smile on his face.
He was nearing the end of the street now. A great feeling of unease washed over him. He had a feeling he was being followed. Maybe it was the guilt. After all, this was the first time he had ventured too close to home. Sleeping with your boss’s wife was supposed to make you feel some kind of way. His suspicions were confirmed when he heard a gruff voice tell him to stop where he was.
Akin started to run. Another man burst out from the trees just in front of him and landed a solid punch on his face.
“You no hear say make you stop nii?”
Akin crumpled to the ground. He started begging.
“Please, I’ll give you anything”
He started to empty his pockets.
The man behind him kicked him hard on his back. Akin didn’t know when the tears started to fall.
The two men began to laugh “The weyrey no even get liver sef yet he dey play timbo timbo with him oga wife ”
Dread coursed through his body. He knew he was done for at this point. For the next couple of minutes, they rained blows on his head, his ribs, everywhere.
Akin had never felt so much pain in his life. He was only saved by a flashlight from the security guard at the street gate who wanted to inquire where the muffled sounds were coming from
The two guys fled with the money he had so generously offered. How he got home that day, he didn’t know.He was absent from the office for the rest of the week. He told Tobi to tell HR that he’d been attacked by robbers and would need a while to recover. For the next few days, the pain that accompanied every breath he took caused him to contemplate his life choices. He didn’t respond to any calls.
On Monday, he returned to the office where he was met with tons of get well soon wishes from his colleagues. As he recounted the story of how he was robbed and beaten up by thieves, Mr Douglas smiled a knowing smile. Before the close of work for the day, Mr Douglas summoned him to his office. Akin feared the worst.
“Sit down.” He said.
Akin winced as he lowered himself unto the chair.
“My wife is very beautiful, isn’t she?”
Akin stayed mute.
“Come on, it’s something you’ve repeatedly told her, are you shy to say it now?” “Yeesss ssir, she’s very beautiful” Akin stammered.
“I know. That’s why I married her.”
“She’s such an animal in bed too, isn’t she?”
Akin prayed under his breath.
“ I’ve read a few of your conversations. You really are an interesting lad”
“ I hope you were able to do all the naughty things you said you’d do to her?”
Shame filled Akin at the thought of Mr Douglas reading through his conversations with his wife.
“It doesn’t matter anyway. I’m an old man. I do not have the stamina I was known for back in the day. I can see why my wife enlisted you to help with that. I’m sure she enjoyed herself.”
“I’m sorry sir, it won’t happen again.”
“I know it won’t. Now the only reason you aren’t getting fired is because you are a hard worker and have amazing talent. I do not believe in sending away promising young men because of a little indiscretion on their part. But if you ever so much as breathe near my wife again, you’ll wish for the “robbers” who attacked you the other day.”
“Now leave my office.”
Akin fled. Later that night, as he tried to fall asleep, his phone buzzed by his side. “Hello?”
“Akin, why haven’t you been picking up my calls? Didn’t you enjoy our time together last week? Anyway, my husband would be out on a business trip next week and I’ve sent the children off to my sister’s place. I would like you to come around...” Mrs Douglas prattled on and on.
“Debola, it’s over. Goodnight.”
