Main Purpose of Reporting in Journalism to Create an Impact – Executive Director, AFYMP

The executive director of the Africa Foundation for Young Professionals (AFYMP), Mr Yinka Olaito has explained that the sole aim of reporting stories in journalism is to effect a change and create an impact. 

He made it known on Saturday at the workshop themed: “Reporting for impact project/workshop” organized by AFYP in partnership with the union of campus journalists, university of Ibadan at Computer Science small lecture theater.

“The purpose of reporting is aimed towards the public interest. Its main purpose is to effect a change and create an impact.” He noted.

Mr Olaito advised campus journalists to cultivate the habit of conducting a follow-up to stories to ascertain if it has effected a change.

“Reporting is not only meant to be used for attacking or exposing. There is a need to do a follow-up on stories. This would portray a journalist as a change maker.”

He also encouraged strict adherence to the codes and ethics of journalism.

While speaking on the topic “Indigenous languages in health and news reporting”, a broadcast journalist, Mrs. Damilola Fajinmi stressed the importance of indigenous language as it bridges a connection gap with the audience.

“Indigenous language is very important because it helps you to connect to the right places. It also helps you to create a focal point with your audience in a way that they can relate to what you are saying.

“Indigenous languages are an integral part of preserving culture and identity. As they enhance communication and access to vital information, especially in rural areas,” she said.

Also, she emphasized the crucial roles indigenous languages play in health reporting as they promote health awareness and also enhance the coverage of communities that might be isolated, overlooked, and underserved.
