NAPS Press: Can you please introduce yourself and your brand?
Emmy: My name is Otakoya Emmanuel Remilekun, a final year student of the department of philosophy under the faculty of Arts. I am the CEO of the brand Emmybakes and Events; home of exquisite cakes and chops where we prioritise producing quality and making our clients satisfaction the ultimate goal.
NAPS Press: How long have you been baking?
Emmy: I’ve been baking for over 5 years by the grace of God.
NAPS Press: What prompted you to start baking?
Emmy: I had a lot of interest in baking since I was little, I watched my mom work, fell in love with everything about it and decided I must learn and know this work even better than my mom. And with the help of God, I’m achieving my aim gradually.
NAPS Press: When starting out, did you have any support from your family? How did they react you you starting a business?
Emmy: Hmmmm, I never had any support from anybody when I was learning this work. I could remember vividly when I want to go learn this craft, I told my dad about it but he didn’t show any interest at all and then he told me I should not learn it because it’s not any job a male child could do. I spoke to my mom about it but she made me understand it is whatever my dad says that she’s going to follow. At that point in life, I knew I had to struggle on my own because there’s nobody to support. When I started learning, all the bills I had to sort in the learning process was sorted by me in one way or the other. It got to a stage, my dad stopped giving me feeding fee because I went against his will. Nevertheless, I didn’t let that kill my passion for the work. I kept pushing harder, and here I am today telling my brand so well. All thanks to God because they’ve become my biggest supporters presently and they’re supporting me in all the possible ways they can.
NAPS Press: How do you balance studies and your craft?
Emmy: Hmmmm, craft and academics are two different worlds embedded in me. I just manage to contain them and play my games right. As a student, I have to ensure I attend my classes so this makes me bake most of my cakes overnight so I won’t miss any class at all. And of course, there are times I miss classes when it comes to delivering clients' orders but thanks to my course rep and friends who help me take excuses from the lecturer(s). I love you all.
NAPS Press: Do you want to pursue your craft full time after school?
Emmy: It’s no doubt that I will definitely pursue my craft after school. Even as a student, I take my time to attend to my work, so of course once I’m done with school, it’s more of an opportunity for me to face it squarely. I will critically think and analyse every aspect of the business and then apply my logical reasonings to get the better solution to making it grow bigger and higher in all ramifications.
NAPS Press: What is your advice for other student entrepreneurs?
Emmy: I know that being a student entrepreneur is not easy but then, we must survive. My advice to my fellow student entrepreneurs is to; put God first everything you’re doing, ensure that you face your studies squarely because failing is never an option. Also, pay attention to your business as well. Be known for always producing quality. Never think of compromising your quality for any reason and never be shy to sell yourself or your brand to the world. The world needs you and your services. Go boldly and speak well of your brand to the people.
I pray Heaven bless us all.
