When Should Students Sleep?

By Mamwrites

How many hours of sleep can be categorised as being sufficient for humans? This question has been frequently asked by people, most especially students. According to scholars, sleep can be defined as an active state of unconsciousness produced by the body where the brain is in a relative state of rest and is reactive primarily to internal stimulus. Another definition of sleep given by medical practitioners is that sleep is a normal, reversible, recurrent state of reduced responsiveness to external stimulation accompanied by complex and predictable changes in physiology.

From the definition by medical practitioners, sleep is known to generally affect the total well-being of human beings . What then cause lack of sleep among students?

Causes of Sleepless Night Among Students On Campus

There are so many factors that cause lack of sleep among students. Some of which are;

OVERNIGHT READING
Overnight reading implies reading at a late period of the day into the morning of the next day. This is mostly common among students due to the fact that some students naturally like to read in a very quiet environment (which is mostly achievable at night) and also because that's when they are less busy from the day activities.

PEER PRESSURE
Some students, due to the freedom they enjoy at school they party with their friends late at nights tereby neglecting sleep.

SLEEP AND ANXIETY
A poor sleeping environment, such as an uncomfortable bed, or a bedroom that's too noisy, hot or cold could also cause sleeplessness.

SUBSTANCES
Another cause of sleeplessness among students is as a result of several substance they take in order to keep themselves awake. Substance such as caffeine (drinks that keep them awake), nescafé coffee and several other substances which later affects their sleeping pattern.

Effects of Lack of Sleep

MEMORY AND LEARNING CHALLENGES
Lack of sleep causes the brain to be inactive and this leads to difficulty in learning during the day.

REDUCTION IN FOCUS AND ATTENTION Studies has shown that when people are sleep-deprived, their brain waves laspse into brief sleep-like patterns while they are awake. That explains why exhausted students seem to space out in class.

POOR MENTAL HEALTH
Students who do not get enough sleep have higher risk for many health problems, including obesity, diabetes and injuries. They are also more likely to have attention and behavioural problems, which can contribute to poor academic performances in school. Sleep deficiency can also lead to physical , mental health problems, injuries, loss of productivity, and even a greater likelihood of death.

As a student, you do not want to joke with your sleep because it determines a lot in your academic performance. It determines how energized you will feel the next morning, how active your brain would be for the new day. Try dey sleep. Stop chatting late into the night. Make sure you sleep atleast 8 hours a day.
