In a significant declaration at the 28th convocation ceremony of the University of Abuja, which was held on Saturday, 17th of February 2024, President Bola Tinubu outlined his administration’s commitment to revitalizing tertiary education in Nigeria.
The president, represented by Mrs Rakiya Gambo Ilyasu, Director of University Education, Federal Ministry of Education, expressed determination to usher in a new era of enhanced performance and productivity in the nation’s universities.
President Tinubu reassured the public that Governing Councils of Universities would soon be constituted and inaugurated to bring fresh impetus to the governance and administration of these educational institutions.
Emphasizing the importance of sustained peaceful operations in the education sector, President Tinubu lauded the resumption of uninterrupted sessions in universities and tertiary institutions. He congratulated the graduating students, their parents, and the University of Abuja community for their commendable achievements.
One noteworthy initiative highlighted by the president is the decision to delist tertiary institutions from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). This move is aimed at alleviating identified challenges, particularly in staff recruitment and emolument payments, while also bolstering the autonomy of universities.
President Tinubu underscored the government’s commitment to the education sector by increasing allocations in the 2024 budget.
These enhanced provisions are designed to address various needs and confront the current challenges facing the sector. The president’s announcement reflects a comprehensive approach to repositioning tertiary institutions for greater effectiveness and productivity.
