Spasms of Academic Pursuits at Knowledge-Birth

By Boluwatife Kuewumi

Every student is akin to a woman who gets married in anticipation for a sense of productivity. At the outset of the academic pursuit, a student gets married to a course of study. Being married to a course should be directed towards the stipulated objective of facilitating a sense of productivity and betterment to the society that one lives. But in one way or another, there is always the need to navigate the throes, contractions or pains the academic journey brings for the attainment of success.

In the delivery suite of academia, students are saddled with the responsibility to adhere strictly to instructions and push through the pangs and contractions that presentations, assignments, research and studies bring. Students see the need to burn the midnight candle while trying to learn and acquire the knowledge that upholds the power to change the world. Getting a certificate is not enough, but students must have the right mindset; sustain the capacity and capability to facilitate improvement and development to the society with the knowledge of the course being studied; serving as a tool for change.

Undoubtedly, there is always a sense of ecstasy that comes when a woman, having endured the contractions and pangs of childbirth, brings forth a child. So also is the unbounded joy of a student, having navigated the contractions of sleepless nights, assignments, research, presentations, and studies, gets a certificate as a proof of having the required knowledge of the change a society needs.

Unfortunately, we live in a society, whereby, most students don't tend to use the certificate as a tool for the change, development or improvement that a society needs. Most students get out of the four walls of academia with an attempt to navigate and survive the vicissitudes that life brings with no sense of contributing to the development of the society.

Stay focused! Stay positive!
