Shot Up Prices: 'Pure-Gutter' Water Replaces Pure Water

The spike in the cost of living in Nigeria is the direct opposite of the Newton's law of universal gravitation as the prices of commodities keep shooting up without a hint of ever subsiding.

A fundamentally disturbing case is that of sachet water that affects all and sundry, including students. The government has neglected and poorly invested in the public infrastructure so much that it affects such basic amenity as drinking water. Hence, many has replaced the thirst for pure water to unsafe 'gutter-water'.

The situation has frustrated people to the peak that many got shovelled into sourcing for alternative to drinking water. This includes drinking directly from boreholes or buying ice water to cut costs.

Economy&Lifestyle discovered that to make ends meet, hawkers have now returned to iced water (water poured in white nylons and refrigerated or added to block to get cold), as it was years back, which comes cheaper and affordable.

Such sellers are seen in school vicinities, market places and motor parks in smaller towns and cities in the country. This was found in an article published on Vanguard on February 26, 2024.

At least, sachet water is nationally regulated by NAFDAC which makes it considerably 'safe' for consumption, but with the wake of alternative sources of water that are unregulated, there's a cause for alarm.

With the health hazard waiting in ambush from this new style of Nigerians' survival, stakeholders hope that measures are in places to direct attention, policies and funds to places of significance through cutting off unnecessary baggage.
